Okay people, here's what I've been cooking up this week. For some this will seem anticlimactic, but in a best-case scenario, it could be the catalyst for some reform in The Pool for years to come. Disclaimer: some (not overly, but still) personal information of The Poolers will be disclosed here, though it should not affect anybody's privacy. But you have been forewarned.
It so happens that five of the ten pool players live north of the Fraser River (on the "Vancouver" side), and the other five live south of it (on the "Surrey" side). If the The Pool were aligned geographically, it would look like so:
Northern Division (Clarence Campbell Conference)
Southern Division (Prince of Wales Conference)
So for this week, just for fun, each division's numbers will be "pooled" (see what I did there?) and the final results tabulated, with the proposed stakes being that the five managers from the victorious division will win something, or will win the right to humiliate the losing division in some way. Now, what does it mean to "pool" the numbers? Simply adding the numbers of all the categories together. Let's take week one's numbers in the penalty minutes category as an example.
Howie Feltersnatch: 98 PIM
Total Southern Division PIM: 254
Total Northern Division PIM: 238
In this example, the Southern Division wins that category; the same is done for the other thirteen categories as well, and a winner is determined. In essence, this is a "five-on-five" matchup as opposed to a "head-to-head" matchup, though it is scored just like a head-to-head matchup. This format is relatively unaffected by where a team sits in the standings; say, for example, that a team loses their week 11 matchup decisively, but scores decisive victories in certain categories - that team is contributing to its division's overall score in the All-Star game.
Needless to say, this will all be calculated manually and not officially recognized by Yahoo. Which is why we have to do it ourselves.
So, poolers: start brainstorming your ideas for victory spoils!
