This will be a multi post story of a MACV-SOG teams Special Reconnaissance mission into Cambodia during the Vietnam war. This mission and others like it became known as the secret war in Cambodia. Wright, O’Connor, and the four CIDG ( Civilian Irregular Defense Group. Special Forces trained ) were running toward the northern edge of the clearing. McKibben lifted off and was just clearing the treetops when Ewing came in to drop Mousseau and his five CIDG. Banking low and hard, both slicks ( Helicopters ) reversed direction and were gone by the time the team had traversed the forty exposed yards and disappeared into the jungle. While the men checked their equipment, Wright ( Special Forces Team Leader ) did a quick head count and made radio contact with support elements. By early 1968, a few teams had been taken in by helicopter, but almost none had gone this deep. Some teams had simply vanished into this no man’s land and the men were not reported as prisoners of war. He knew the code. Wright, Mousseau, O’Connor, and the CIDG would not allow themselves to be captured. They would fight to their deaths protecting one another. After a half hour, when it appeared that the helicopters had not attracted any enemy activity, Wright and Mousseau reviewed the map. Wright signaled O’Connor forward. He whispered that Mousseau had spotted a small group of people moving toward them along the trail. “Watch the rear,” Wright said, “and be ready to reverse in case of trouble.” Three NVA ( North Vietnamese Army ) soldiers approached their position. Armed with AK- 47s slung across their chests, Wright was a dozen yards behind Mousseau, deeper in the undergrowth, while O’Connor was poised for retreat a few yards behind him. The noise increased, and O’Connor tried to discern when the sounds of breaking branches began to recede, indicating the crew had passed them by. It was not to be. A muffled scream was accompanied by a quick succession of “clicks” that were the reports from a silenced pistol. It was followed quickly by a short burst of gunfire from an AK- 47. #IgRecon #CombatStories #MACVSOG #Vietnam #Cambodia #SpecialReconnaissance #SpecialForces #GreenBerets #Warriors
