In the Inquisitorious, nervousness was a survival skill. 

Irene had been trained to let it heighten her awareness, to allow the fear-adrenaline surge to push her senses and twitch reactions past normal limits.

That was useful in combat; that knowing-before-knowing drove her blade and bullets beautifully in the knife’s edge dance she thrived so well in. It was not so helpful in dances of the heart- as she was reminded, once again -as she twitched half a second before she heard the door hiss open. She interrupted her nervous pacing with a lurch backwards, spinning towards the door, hand on hilt, her whole body- knees then hips then back then shoulders -tensing and pushing in sequence to allow her to draw and thrust in one perfect, powerful motion.

Then her brain caught up.
