The best way to deal with it really depends on the group: with some of them, the only solution was to shout. Be really loud, as offensive as they were, and that got me their respect. I know that’s stupid and lame but sometimes they just need to be forced to listen (and fear) you. But when the situation gets out of control, you MUST tell the administration that your students are awful and get other people in charge to stick with you. Parents usually don’t care/are in no position to do anything, but if other teachers, principal, supervisors get in their way, it can restore order. (had to put it in a conversation, asks are too short. if you think it can help and you feel like copypasting my answer on your blog, would be great :)
