How’s bein’ a mom? Have you gone back to teach this year?
It’s great, thanks for asking! It keeps me busy (obviously) but it’s the most wonderful thing. I went back to teaching when she was 9 weeks old (2nd semester of last year) and I’m back in full force this year in a new position as a math coach. It’s been a year of changes!

Hey, I'm a 17 year old student from Germany and I was dumb enough to fall in love with one of my teachers. Now, obviously (!!!) I'm not hoping for her to ever like me back in any way that'd be crazy. I was just wondering if you think I should talk to her about it or not. Have you ever heard of a situation like this?

I'm doing a practicum in a preschool right now and today was just horrible, I have tears in my eyes right now. The teacher and paras I'm with tell me almost everyday I'm there to not go into teaching, and it's just really discouraging. It took me such a long time to figure out that I wanted to teach, and it took even longer for my family to stop being horrible about my decision. I'm just so stressed out and I feel like I'm spinning out of control. Do you have any words of encouragement for me?
I have days where I wonder why the hell I picked teaching as my career, but as I get more years of experience, those days become far fewer. A few years ago in the beginning of my teaching career, I would cry in my classroom after school at least 3 days a week. I know that doesn’t sound encouraging BUT bear with me -- I just finished up the first quarter of this school year and I have never felt this way, not once. It gets better. Things are hard at first, and you’ll always have good days and bad days. You’ll be stressed out sometimes. But other times you’ll be rocking and rolling and your students will be so into what you’re doing and everything is just awesome. And most days will be somewhere in the middle. Don’t let anyone talk you out of it because they had a bad day (or a series of bad days). If my five-years-ago self could see me now she wouldn’t believe how far I’ve come.
Whenever I plan an arts and crafts activity.
I planned a couple for my long-term sub...I hope she still wants to be my friend after this is all over.
When a kid is enthusiastically explaining their reasoning behind a completely wrong answer.
When the kids bring their ENTIRE Halloween candy haul to school and bust it out during snack time.

Actually I’ve been to many classrooms where teachers complain that students are lazy or have never been challenged. In reality the teachers aren’t using the concept of the Zone of Proximal development properly, and scaffolding their teaching. If your students are struggling it’s probably not on their parents, in fact many privileged children have been exposed to best practices which make the struggle and confrontation of learning a lot more pleasant and therefore if a teacher continues to use adequate scaffolding, the students will be far more successful. So perhaps the issue is with your teaching and not your students.

elementary education major here...what's your school's dress code? I've always wondered what it is for teachers!
My school expects “professional” dress in that we do not wear leggings as pants (boo!) or jeans (except on Fridays). Most teachers wear dresses, skirts, or slacks with blouses or collared shirts on top. The men don’t wear ties or anything and most of us wear sneakers or Toms/Keds/etc. as shoes. My school is fine with visible tattoos and “unique” hair colors but not all of them are. I just think it varies!

I fucking love when people have some vendetta against educators due to a slight – either real or perceived – that they experienced while in school, so they just assume all educators do That Thing™ because they are Evil™ and accuse them of The Thing™ at every opportunity bc it somehow makes them feel better to attack somebody that shares a profession with somebody they didn’t like
I still remember when somebody sent me 5 full back to back anon messages raging against me for something they assumed i did and it was just like ????? Did you see in my bio that I’m a teacher and it triggered war flashbacks or something????
Kids need to struggle. But let’s remember to teach them how to learn

Kids need to struggle, but they don’t need to struggle without help. There’s a difference between challenging them and just flat-out not giving a shit whether or not they learn difficult material.
