Trump staff writer takes fall for lifting Michelle Obama passages
Trump staff writer takes fall for lifting Michelle Obama passages
After nearly 48 hours of awkward denials of plagiarism regarding Melania Trump’s RNC speech, a Donald Trump staff writer came forward on Wednesday to take the blame.
“I apologize for the confusion and hysteria my mistake has caused,” said Meredith McIver, who described herself as “a longtime friend and admirer of the Trump family” in a statement posted on the Trump campaign’s website.

Last night, Melania Trump, appeared to have plagiarised entire sections of her prose from Michelle Obama’s 2008 DNC Convention speech. Addressing the very diverse crowd, she delivered words verbatim the current First Lady spoke 8 years ago. Today, the backlash is very palpable. Remarkably, I have been able to speak briefly with Melania to discuss the snafu and her thoughts about the possibility of being the next First Lady of the United States. Here is the full text of the interview.
Question: Were you aware of the similarities in your speech with Michelle Obama’s 2008 DNC address?
Melania: Overall, my life has been one of survival, and the decisions that I have made along the way, including my identification, have been to survive. I stand by my work.
Q: Is that… Is that what Rachel Dolezal said in her NBC interview?
M: I don’t understand the question.
Q: Okay. We’ll move on. Are you afraid that this might hurt your husband’s chances in the November election?
M: The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
Q: In your own words, how do you want the people of the United States of America to know you if you were to take on the role of First Lady of the United States?
M: First of all, I try to be a positive role model. I always felt that my greatest asset was not my physical ability, it was my mental ability. I learned that the only way you are going to get anywhere in life is to work hard at it. Whether you're a musician, a writer, an athlete or a businessman, there is no getting around it. If you do, you'll win - if you don't, you won't. I'm just going to go live life. I'm going to go enjoy life. I have nothing left to hide. I am kind of a free person, a free soul. Bruce always had to tell a lie. He was always living that lie. Caitlyn doesn't have any secrets.
Q: Right. Okay. Has there been anything in your life that you feel has given you the ability to take charge and provided you with the strength to be the FLOTUS?
M: All my life I had to fight. I had to fight my daddy. I had to fight my brothers. I had to fight my cousins and my uncles. A girl child ain't safe in a family of men. But I never thought I'd have to fight in my own house. She let out her breath. I loves Harpo, she say. God knows I do. But I'll kill him dead before I let him beat me.
Q: You know. I think I’ve got what I need. I do have to say, though, that the blue belt you’re wearing is really lovely.
M: It is not just blue, it's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent... wasn't it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.
The excuses amaze me
