I’ve been thinking a little about this idea of the “friend zone” and the way people contort other’s feelings to make themselves a victim.

Here’s a simple analogy that might help:

You cannot enter someone’s house unless they open the door and invite you in, otherwise you’re trespassing. You’re the breaking the law.

I think perhaps there have been times where I’ve trespassed inside someone’s emotional home. I do my best to leave as neatly as possible when I realize it, but it still happens. And just because you talk about something you may want, doesn’t mean the other person owes you anything. They may have a lot of locks they’re not ready to open. They may be remodeling some old furniture or even reconstructing after a tornado. They may ask you to help rebuild that home but that still doesn’t mean you have been invited in. It’s hard, but we have to be wary of this. Otherwise, it leads to more locks, more security, and possibly more destroyed homes.
