Recently I’ve been feeling quite a bit of guilt and slightly inept because the school year is drawing to a close and I still have outstanding speech/language referrals. So today, I counted the referrals I’ve addressed between initial speech only, academic, and reevaluations and it’s over 30. Probably more since there were a few I didn’t have on my list. So I’ve assessed over 30 small children. Many both speech and language, requiring multiple sessions and many with challenging behaviors that extend said testing time.

Do I wish that I didn’t have any left to screen/test? Absolutely. But it does make me feel a bit better.

One more week before spring break and in that time, we’ve got progress reports, evals and IEPs to write, annual updates and meetings, regular services, and of course, delightful Medicaid billing.

How are all my teaching/education friends doing?

Elementary schools in May: This week we have magician day, bubble day, a trip to the circus, field day, and a drive in movie.

The other day I was hanging out with my kiddos during lunch and there’s this tiny blonde girl in one of the classes. She started in the program in 2018 with just a few speech sounds. Even last year before we had to leave the school, she mostly used verbal approximates. So Thursday she’s eating lunch which was chicken nuggest, beans and for some reason, a piece of wheat bread, and she tells me:

“Look I got bread! I love bread! Mommy didn’t give me bread.”

It’s just amazing how everything clicks sometimes.

Professor: I think I should mention now that we don’t call vocal folds, cords.

Me, in my mind: This is one thing you don’t have to teach me. I’ve been raging at tv shows for years.
