Speech and Language through Twister
While thinking and researching all the possible therapeutic benefits of classic game of twister, I came across two speech therapy blogs with great ideas to work on speech and language! First, pull out some toys or objects (red Elmo, blue cup, yellow spoon, green straw, red car etc.) with matching solid colors to the twister board and fill up a bucket, basket, or box, then put the twister mat across the room. Next, start by pulling out two objects at a time asking them to find the “car,” then after finding the correct toy they can run across the room and place it on the corresponding color. Once they have mastered one item at a time, you can have them get two or more items at a time, run and match colors. The second speech-language adaptation is for children who are working on articulation or phonology. Using Webber articulation or phonology cards, or whatever your speech-language pathologist has given you to practice, they chose a color and cover their dots. Now, spin the spinner board, say each word multiple times then cover the appropriate dot! If you’re working on following directions, remove the cards and use “jumping feet” to listen for directions. Spin and add extra directions such as “Jump to blue and clap.” (https://jenniferperkins.com/playing-twister-with-a-toddler/, http://teachmetotalk.com/2014/03/27/twister-for-toddlers-therapy-tip-of-the-week-for-32714/ , https://thespeechroomnews.com/2012/05/twister.html)
