Wednesday, October 8: Speeed, "Powertrip Pigs"

“Powertrip Pigs” didn’t quite offer what the guys in Speeed implied by giving themselves that name, but it also wasn’t so far removed from what Annihilator was doing at that time and picked up the pace towards the end.  To the extent that Jeff Waters owned virtually every aspect of Annihilator’s sound, Aaron Randall and Ray Hartmann did a reasonably convincing job of recreating their former boss’ approach, even if Jack Frost wasn’t a shredder by default.  By the same token, “Powertrip Pigs” was late ‘90s metal through and through with everything that entailed, from the vaguely industrial crunch to the downtuned guitars and gruff vocals gesticulating antisocial lyrics.  It ultimately wasn’t surprising that the members of Speeed, particularly Frost, went on to other things after the one album, but the track was enjoyable for what it was.
