Why is spelling in the English Language so difficult?

The English Language is made up of 143 or so different sound pictures that make up the code of reading and spelling.

How can we help children with spelling? The Phono-Graphix™ Program teaches the nature of the code in the English language. That is: letters are pictures of sounds, a sound picture can be one or more than one letter, there is variation in the code and there is overlap in the code.
