Emma has a secret that she had been keeping from the entire team. What happens when that secret come flying in to get her.
Chuckling at the childish smile that filled Emma’s face, Jennifer shook her head in amusement. It wasn’t often that the youngest member of the team joined them for drinks, but that night was one of the rare and planned occasions.
Well aware of her reasons, Jennifer never pried when the girl turned down the offer. The rest of the team tended to query her lack of interest. Usually she was quick to make an excuse, often blaming a dislike for alcohol rather than the truth.
It always worried Jennifer that Emma withheld the truth for so long. She believed that holding in a secret that big would have catastrophic side effects. She was sure the younger blonde would explode if she withheld it any longer. However, Jennifer was also weary of the fact that Emma would find it just as hard to tell the secret as she did to keep it.
Realising that Penelope had made her way into the bullpen, Jennifer smiled in her direction. As the newest addition to the bullpen saw Emma spinning, she rushed over glancing at their empty desks and letting a grin fill her face.
“Are you done? Good. Let’s get going. I have this burning desire to see Emma drunk.” Penelope rambled, not letting any of the others get a word in edgeways.
Smiling with amusement, Emma asked, “Who else is going?”
“Me, you, Garcia and Emily.” Jennifer answered, placing her hands on the back of the youngest shoulders. As she did, her eyes caught on a blur of blonde running out of the elevator with a uniformed officer following closely behind.
Fear contorted Emma’s face, tensing in her shoulders beneath Jennifer’s hands. That fear was soon replaced with worry as the agent noticed the tears staining the girls face. Finally making out the face of the young girl, Jennifer realised that it was Lacey. Even her heart was beating rapidly in her chest.
Suddenly, and without warning, Emma flew out of her chair and towards the young girl kneeling before her with open arms. Jennifer could tell from where she was stood that something was wrong. Lacey had never been in the office before, neither had Emma ever seemed of tense.
“Mommy!” the young girl cried, throwing her arms around Emma’s neck and gripping for dear life. Jennifer had nodded thanks at the officer, causing him to turn and leave unsure of what was going on.
Pulling back from the hug, Emma placed her hands on either side of Lacey’s face and wiped the tears with her thumbs. Her voice shaking with worry, she asked, “Baby, what’s wrong?”
“There was a man.” The girl sobbed, looking into her mom’s eyes for support which she found in excess. “He came into the house and Auntie Paisley yelled at him. Then she told me to run. So, I did.”
“Did you hear what Auntie Paisley yelled?”
“No. I was ready for bed, so I didn’t have my ears in.” Lacey explained pointing towards her ears that were missing the hearing aids she was required to wear. “Mommy, I’m scared.”
Pulling her hands away from Lacey’s face, Emma signed “I know Baby.”
“What is going to happen to Auntie Paisley?” Lacey sobbed, looking at her mom for the truth. Emma took in a sharp breath before pulling her daughter into a warm embrace.
“I need you to go with my friend Emily, okay?” Emma spoke, her voice slow and clear. “She will need you to tell her everything. If you can’t hear her ask her to speak slowly or louder.”
“Yes, Mommy.”
Placing her hand on her back, Emma guided Lacey to where Emily and Jennifer were stood watching the entire scene unfold. Smiling at the young girl, who looked more like her mother than anyone wished to admit, Emily held out her hand for the young girl.
“My name is Emily.” She declared, her voice clear and slow like Emma’s had been moments ago. She continued to talk as she walked away from Jennifer and Emma, the former comforting the latter as tears began to escape her eyes.
Guilt was written all over Emma’s face. She was sure that this was something to do with her, there was no other explanation. However, that wasn’t the purest guilt she felt. The guilt that was most prominent was the guilt she felt when she saw Spencer stood behind Lacey as they spoke. Confusion had filled his face.
“Can you try and call Paisley?” Emma asked Jennifer who nodded in reply, taking the phone from Emma’s hand. “If not, try Vincent.”
Once she had whispered to Jennifer, Emma crossed to bullpen towards Spencer who had wrapped his arms around his torso. She was in floods of tears and barely able to control her breathing, but Spencer deserved an explanation.
“Em, how old is she?” Spencer asked, his voice barely louder than a whisper.
“Eight.” Emma answered, shame filling her voice. Tears began to cascade even faster out of her eyes. He was going to hate her for keeping the secret. Never before had she been so avid to keep a secret, now it was coming back to bite her.
Looking at her with shock, Spencer took the shame the wrong way. He believed that the shame was from the age, not the secret the young girl had become. “She… She is his, isn’t she?”
“What!?” Emma questioned quickly, unable to control the shock in her voice.
“That is why you left. You didn’t want to be labelled.” Spencer rambled, placing his hands on her shoulder and pulling her into a hug. Emma was stood, stuck in the same position almost catatonic. “Em, you didn’t have to run away. You could have stayed, none of us would have judged-”
“Spencer!” Emma cried as she pushed herself out of his arms. She didn’t deserve to be there. “She isn’t his, she’s yours! I left because you had everything planned and I didn’t want my mistake to get in the way of that.”
“Our,” Spencer whispered, not nearly loud enough for Emma to hear. However, he increased his volume to a yell as he said, “Our mistake. Emma, that little girl is our mistake.”
“I’m so sorry I didn’t tell-”
“No, just stop.” Spencer sighed, looking at Emma with the disgust she knew she deserved. “You kept her from me for eight years. Then you lied to me for the last nine months.”
“I know that-”
“I-I need time to this this over.” Spencer whispered, taking a step back from Emma. She had broken down. Her walls crumbling around her as she watched him walk away.
Losing him again was heart breaking. Watching him walk away was worse. She knew that it was her fault, but she never thought that she would watch him leave the two of them.
Glancing back, she saw Derek, Aaron and Jason looking towards the pair, shock set into their features. Jason had already known about Lacey, being her great-uncle, but he had never expected to see Spencer cause his niece so much pain. He was not angry, as he knew she should have told him about Lacey, he was just shocked.
