Vox hella makes his S/O roleplay as Alastor so he can hate fuck them. You can't convince me otherwise.
The Real Problem with Shigaraki's Ending (imo)
Back to my hot takes, but I promise, this one's more critical of the ending than the rest lol And as always, this is just like, my opinion man. No shade to people who disagree.
So, with that being said: I don't think Tomura Shigaraki dying is inherently a bad choice for the narrative, but I do think it was executed very poorly.
I wish that Shigaraki actually chose to die in order to defeat All for One. An "if I'm going down, you're going down with me" moment to maybe save his friends or even just to get back at the bastard who groomed him.
It's obvious that Horikoshi was trying to go for something like this, but the thing is that Shigaraki's physical body was falling apart regardless of whether he gained back control of it or not. He was going to die no matter what, and ultimately it ends up giving him a really devastating ending where he never actually lives even for a minute with true bodily autonomy. And that FOR SURE leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
I wish that the only way for All for One to be defeated was for Shigaraki to sacrifice himself. Then at least it would've been an active choice of his and not just another terrible thing that happened to him.
Shigaraki is done dirty by one major party of the narrative, but it's not by any of the heroes he faces in the final war.
It's All for One.
Shigaraki's lack of agency and back-seat taking to All for One is a pretty big problem in the series overall. It makes him feel really sidelined in his own story, and honestly, it robs us of what could've been the best moments and fights in the series. (Shigaraki's fights are probably some of my favorite to read/watch - he's so unhinged and HILARIOUS).
It's probably the main reason why the non-villain side of the fandom have a hard time connecting with him, and why us on the villain side of the fandom have an especially hard time LOSING him. He's pretty much written out of the story immediately after his true power and character are fully realized. And we essentially end up losing him as soon as we get him back. It fucking sucks and I hate it so much.
But at the end of the day, Horikoshi kind of wrote himself into a corner with this one.
Shigaraki needed to never give up on being a villain, but he also needed to be "saved". And for that to happen it meant he couldn't be saved from his convictions - because again, the narrative AGREES with him that hero society can't go on the way it is. He didn't NEED a redemption arc or "rehabilitation", him turning to the heroes' side like that or entering some "villain rehab program" would fundamentally go against his character and make him a participant in the system that abandoned him and his friends. And I can't imagine that after a lifetime of being at some All for One's mercy, he'd derive any happiness from getting locked up in the same set-up as him in Tartarus.
(if deku had saved shigaraki's life, lol)
So with all that being said, that meant for Shigaraki to be successfully saved while keeping his character's integrity in tact, he had to be saved from something else.
Or from someone else.
Pacing, execution and muddy delivery of a message, those are the real issues with MHA's ending, rather than the individual story beats themselves. Even if we keep everything the same, I think even just 5 more chapters, or five more pages to each current chapter would've gone a looooong way in making the final Shigaraki v Deku fight more satisfying, and making Shigaraki's death a bit easier to swallow.
At some point I'd like to make a post about "What I Would've Recommended if I Were Horikoshi's Editor", but for now this is where I leave y'all. This post is way too long already lol
じゃあね〜!
So Play Nice is over! (kinda) What's Next???
In case y'all didn't see (which I kinda doubt) I've officially posted the last chapter of Play Nice!!
...part 1.
cause i got too many ideas and decided to make a sequel.
shit.
But still! So very exciting! And the reception and congratulations from all of y'all has been even more amazing! Thank you for all our kind words of congratulations and just all the support over the years. This fic was never supposed to be 38+ chapters (it wasn't even supposed to be 2 lol), I was never supposed to be writing it for 4 years (and beyond), but here we are. Even more amazingly here YOU still are. And I can't wait to show you all what more for this world and characters I have in store.
...in like 6 months.
Yeahhhh, what's next is that I'm taking a Play Nice break lol. Not a break from writing and posting, not by a long shot. Actually, it's the exact opposite! I'm gonna use this time to get some other writing done.
Finish Step by Step, finish the commissions (and hopefully take on some more?? 👀) that my dear purchasers have been waiting ever so patiently for, finish the WIP's I've had in my Google docs literally FIVE-EVER (lookin at you McDonald's Manager!Shigaraki and Age Gap Endeavor fic), ONE-SHOTS ONE-SHOTS ONE-SHOTS!!! Not to mention I'm gonna go and do a heavy duty clean-up and re-org of my blog, tags, masterlist, and potentially actually go back and edit Play Nice itself. (Nothing major, just the boring stuff).
Aaaaaand, hopefully I'll work on some of my own original writing as well.
It's my resolution to FINALLY finish an original book this year, and I'm hoping to get a nice head start on that with this time. Play Nice is about the length of 3 books and I did that in a little under 4 years after all, so why not with something I can actually make money off of? lolol
Thank you all again for your kindness and support. This fic and all of you have, not exaggerating, genuinely changed my life. Made it brighter in some of its darkest moments these last few years. And seriously bolstered my confidence as a writer. I hope you'll all continue to stick with me and send me fun headcanons even though MHA has ended. I promise you that my Shigaraki hyperfixation isn't going anywhere. With like 30+ figures, 270k words of fanfiction, and a tattoo, I'm in way too deep lolol
See you all soon and much love,
💖 Spice🌶️
that threesome post got me thinking…. imagine if in play nice shigaraki shares mc with spinner (this wouldnt happen cuz ik he would never share mc but still 😩)
I think about it all the time lol. It would be so damn cute. It doesn't really work for the type of story and arcs I'm writing for them, but I had a really good time writing Wax Wings and it seems like everyone else had a really good time reading it, so I think I'll probably whip up more AU content like that in the future xD
Alright, since my last silly Vox headcanon blew up so quickly, here's another hot take:
Vox fucks EXCLUSIVELY to "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles.
What's your tomura tattoo?!??? Can we see 😳
For sure!! I think I've posted it here before but I'm always happy to show off this silly little guy lmao
It's the low-res shot from Season 1 that never fails to make me smile. He's actually got a little mark on his hand now from where my cat PUNCTURED me so I guess it's even more accurate lol
Got 'im done at Supersweet Tattoos & Coffee, a really awesome tattoo shop AND cafe with majority women tattoo artists. Stop by and show them some love if you're ever in L.A! If you don't want ink they've got GREAT lates and vegan baked goods.
I feel like PN spinner is the kind of guy I'd invite to a girls night. Not like a gay best friend, but because he understands boundaries and is just a super nice guy in general
He also seems like a great guy to take shopping, he seems like her give actual opinions unlike tomura's "yeah, that nice. Thats nice to. How do I know what you should get?! It's your choice?! Both are nice!?"
He'd say something like "Yeah, the first on suits you, but the second is more flattering on your figure, and I think the colour is better on you too. Id get the second"
Just an observation ig lol
YES! NO YES THIS EXACTLY!!!
Spinner is just a perfect friend overall. He gets really excited over the things his friends get really excited about, even if he doesn't personally give a shit about those things.
MC wants to do a new TikTok dance? He doesn't really get TikTok or dancing, but he's SO excited for her the first time she gets the whole thing right.
Tomura's lowkey obsessed with a new ridiculously gruesome horror movie? Look, Spinner doesn't really wanna watch it, but he'll listen to Tomura ramble about it for three hours, no problem.
10/10 BEST friend to go out to a bar with. He's a great, lowkey drinking buddy in general, is pretty good at bar games, and has no problem switching to guard dog mode if someone starts bugging you.
And +10000 for the girls' night honestly. Happy to let you paint his nails, put bows in his hair, play MASH. For all his insecurities, he has no hang-ups about his masculinity.
Probably due to his fat coc--
