These hot tofu nuggets from Nashville put a fiery spin on a traditional comfort dish. They are ideal for both spice lovers and vegans because they are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
Ingredients: 1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed and cubed. 1 cup buttermilk. 1 cup all-purpose flour. 1 tablespoon paprika. 1 tablespoon garlic powder. 1 tablespoon onion powder. 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper. 1 teaspoon salt. 1 teaspoon black pepper. Oil for frying. Hot sauce, for drizzling.
Instructions: Preheat oil in a deep fryer or large skillet to 375F 190C. In a shallow bowl, mix buttermilk with half of the paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. In another shallow bowl, combine flour with the remaining half of the spices. Dip tofu cubes into the buttermilk mixture, then dredge in the seasoned flour until evenly coated. Fry the coated tofu in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Remove tofu nuggets from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Drizzle hot sauce over the fried tofu nuggets before serving.
