Chapter Four:
You didn't hate your family, but you didn't like them either. On one hand they didn't force you to join their nightly activities but that also meant being left out since their secret identities were a big part of their lives. You never were close to any of them in particular, honestly Duke and Tim were the only ones you've actually had conversations with, although it was more like small talk before they were whisked away for more important matters.
Your father was in the middle, while you actually had conversations with the man they were long ago, now the most you get from him is a grunt or hum.
You did not hate Bruce, he was not a bad man in any way. He gave you a roof over your head and your own black card for anything, which you often used to buy necessities but there has been the occasional time you bought supplies for a new hobby you wanted to try.
You will admit that coming home and occasionally catching the whole family, Alfred included, in the kitchen or living room all laughing or just relaxing did crack your heart a little. Watching everyone get along and forget about the fact that you lived at the manor broke you, but you never minded. After all, how were you supposed to get along with a whole family consisting of vigilantes? You did your part by attending many gala's in Bruce's favor and often saw how other wealthy parents treated their children and considered yourself lucky. Bruce never hit you, or berated you, or even let you fend for yourself, he gave you everything.
Just not his attention.
Now here you are sitting down trying to eat dinner while your father, who you saw earlier at the gala, is standing at the doorway in the kitchen.
You didn't look up to meet his gaze, instead focusing on finishing your dinner, you knew that Bruce saw you at the gala and he probably wanted to check on you before leaving. Of course he didn't know that you knew about his secret identity.
“What happened to them?” Bruce turned to look at Alfred, who was standing at the sink.
“It seems as if a villain managed to cause some damage at the building Master Y/N was attending a gala, they got some minor scratches but are otherwise fine.”
You couldn't help the small eye twitch, they did know you were sitting right there right?
“Hm. Were they alone during the attack?”
“No, Peter Parker was there who had more serious injuries but was sent to the hospital for further inspection-”
A cluttering noise filled the room along with a loud screech as you stood abruptly and dropped your silverware. You almost forgot about your friend! Was he okay? Did he have any internal injuries? Were Aunt May and Uncle Ben okay?
“Master Y/N? What is wrong?”
“I need to call Aunt May and Uncle Ben!” You quickly replied to the butler before you tried to move past the two tall men. That's when you felt it, a tingling sensation of the back of your neck and before he could, you yanked your arms back just as Bruce went to grab you.
You could see the surprise on his face before your body moved on its own and you threw yourself out of the way as Damien was coming to the kitchen entryway.
“Hey!-”
“Sorry!” You called out over your shoulder before running back to your room and slamming the door open. You quickly grabbed your phone on the nightstand before immediately calling Uncle Ben, who you had on speed dial.
Ring-Ring-Ring
“Wonder when you'd call.”
“Uncle Ben! Are you okay? Is Peter okay? Is he breathing? Aunt May is she- “
“Relax sweetheart. Take some deep breaths.” You could hear the amused tone in the older man's voice, you let out a small sigh before taking some large breaths in and letting them out.
“Im fine, Aunt May is fine, and Peter is fine. Just some bruising and small cuts, according to him you saved his life!”
You couldn't help the warm feeling crawling up your neck. “Saving his life is a bit of an exaggeration, but I'm glad everyone's good.”
After some more small talk and even saying hi to Aunt May, you hung up and let out a large sigh of relief. You didn't hesitate to plop down onto your bed and you have never been more glad that Alfred made you shower before eating.
You snuggled up to your pillows and not even a full 5 minutes later you were out like a light, exhausted after everything.
Bruce never considered himself a good parent, but he also didn't think he was a bad one either. He tried his best to give each of his children the best chance at success, while he did push them towards the Robin/Batgirl route he would not force them to carry the mantle.
All except you.
When Bruce first met you after your mother's mysterious death in a plane crash he had to do a double take. You looked just like him, from the outlines of his face to the shape of his nose and even to the resting 'Wayne' face everyone said he had.
There was no denying you were his.
Maybe that is what caused Bruce to be distant, the fact that you were a carbon copy of him and even got Alfred to make a comment about how you reminded the butler of Bruce in his younger days made him feel uneasy.
Of course he didn't even try and get you to be a sidekick, there was no way he would be able to focus with you by his side. Bruce tried to show up in your life, but every time you locked eyes with the man he just left you in the hands of Alfred.
Bruce, or Batman in this case, was doing his usual patrol routes with Robin (Damien) when he managed to spot someone on a glass roof of some building he recognized. It was a common place that gala's were often held, it was high class and spacious, perfect for the uptight and frankly boring parties that companies, or wealthy people in general, would throw.
Of course it didn't take long for Batman to spot the giant bomb on the back of this person's back and after some back and forth, Robin managed to send the man crashing into the roof causing the bomb to go off, and for debris to fall inside the building.
When Batman looked through the roof he felt his heart almost stop.
You were there.
What were you doing at a gala? Surely you didn't enjoy them right?
He also noticed the boy you were with, who the hell was this kid? And why were you dancing so close? You were way too young to date anybody! At least that's what he told himself.
Batman also noticed how you pushed the boy out of the way before the roof came crashing in, but before he could move-
“The man is now in police custody.” Damien's voice cut through the night air, making Bruce look back at the boy. They exchanged a few more words before Bruce looked back only to see you gone, of course he spotted you with Alfred in front of the building a few seconds later and took this as a sign to return home.
Bruce needed to talk to you.
. . .
What Bruce wasn't expecting was for you to be so, uh small? Not necessarily physically but more so in the space you were in. It's as if you were trying to take up as little space as possible, which only served to confuse Bruce more. This house was certainly big enough for everyone, so why were you trying to shrink in on yourself?
The man asked Alfred about you, despite you being right there, in hopes that you would speak out. You did not.
It wasn't until Alfred had mentioned Peter something, Barker maybe? Or was it Farker? Either way he mentioned a boy's name, and Bruce immediately thought of the boy you were dancing with and who, in his opinion, was way too close to you physically to just be dancing.
That's when you stood up suddenly and exclaimed something about calling before you tried to leave. Bruce tried to stop you, so he could actually talk to you, but when he reached his arm out it's like you knew what he was going to do as you dodged his grab and then dodged Damien as he was coming inside the kitchen.
Bruce stared after you in genuine surprise.
When the hell did you get so agile? How did you know he was going to try and grab you? Bruce never put his hands on his kids, no matter the scenario, he did not tolerate hitting kids at all.
It wasn't luck either, the movement it took to pull those stunts off were trained as if you have practiced over and over again.
“What happened to them?” Damien asked as he strolled in to grab a bottle of water from the fridge. “Also when did they learn to dodge like that? Even for a civilian it wasn't bad form.”
Bruce took a second before blinking over at Alfred, who was cleaning off the table.
“Has Y/N been taking any uh self defense classes? Or acrobatics? Anything related?” The man watched as the butler shook his head.
“Master Y/N has shown interest in many things over the years but anything requiring excessive physical movement doesn't seem to interest them.”
Bruce just stared at the older man, he cleared his throat ever so slightly.
“Do they always attend gala's? They never seemed interested in the whole high society type setting.”
“Master Y/N goes to them when you cannot, often filling in for you and taking over as the public speaker for Wayne Enterprises, they are quite charismatic. This specific gala was a celebration for their accomplishments at Oscorp, they had gotten a full-time and paid internship there directly under the head scientists, Dr. Connors.”
Bruce felt his jaw drop.
You? You took over the gala speeches and were charismatic?
Bruce felt an uneasy feeling settled in his stomach but before he could speak, he heard a scoff coming from his other biological child.
“Them? Charismatic? Have you seen them? I do not believe it for a moment.” Damien looked at Alfred with a raised eyebrow. “Do we have any proof of this 'charismatic' person in action?”
Alfred smiles softly before bowing his head slightly. “I do. I have many of their interviews and speeches saved on a hard drive, if you wish you can have your proof.”
Bruce looks between the butler and his son before feeling his phone vibrate, which he looks at immediately. It was Dick, claiming that everyone was waiting for him in the Bat Cave.
Bruce looked up at the two others.
“Damien, meet the others in the Bat Cave. Alfred, can you get me that hard drive?”
Damien nodded immediately and set off to group up with the others while Alfred began leading Bruce to his personal room, where he said the hard drive was held.
Why did Alfred have the hard drive in his personal room? Why didn't you say anything about the internship?
Bruce thought he knew you, just a small, shy and quiet kid, but according to Alfred you weren't really shy which only confused Bruce further.
How could the man who claimed to be your biological father know nothing about his child?

Chapter Six:
You stood so still they could have mistaken you for a statue. How could you not? This is the first time you've seen them all together in front of you, looking at you, like this.
“Do yall need something..?” You finally asked after a few moments of silence.
“Can we not walk around our own home?” Jason asks, his arms crossed in front of him, why did he look so irritated?
“You're literally standing in the middle of the foyer.”
You saw Tim and Dick try, but fail, to hide their snickers.
“Where have you been?” Damien is the one who pipes up next.
You didn't even blink. “Out with a friend.”
“What friend?”
“You wouldn't know him.” You couldn't help the small twitch of your fingertips, you were getting agitated.
“You mean Peter Parker? Who lives with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May?” Tim asks with a smug grin on his face.
“Yeah that's not creepy.” You pulled out your phone and immediately tried to walk around the group of people.
“Where do you think you're going?”
You froze, that wasn't just a normal question, this was Bruce using his billionaire CEO voice which was slightly intimidating you couldn't lie.
“To my room? What? Am I not allowed in there anymore?” You look over your shoulder, agitation coming through your voice.
“Come on now birdy! We just want to all spend time together! Like a-”
You cut him off. “What? Like a family?” You scoff. “Do you guys need something from me? Got guests coming over and needing me to play nice or something?”
“So defensive.” Cassandra muttered.
“Whats with the hostility? We are your family.” Stephanie peaks her head out, clearly confused about your attitude.
You cast your eyes downward at the floor, your hands clenching by your sides. “Family..right.”
What you didn't see was how they all glanced at each other.
Bruce stepped forward. “I heard you are valedictorian at Gotham University and are already promised a job at Oscorp. Is that correct?”
You whipped your head around so fast it's surprising your neck didn't snap. “How do you know about that?”
“So it is true.” Bruce hums.
You felt like a little kid again, your whole family standing together away from you.
You who were always excluded because they didn't give you the choice of being a vigilante. Why didn't Bruce train you? You've seen everyone when they were kids, except Damien since he still is a kid, and they came in worse shape than you. So why were you still outcasted?
“How come you never told us you were to be valedictorian?” Tim's voice breaks through your thoughts.
“You never asked.” Which wasn't a lie.
“What about the Oscorp party? You were announced head intern! That's a great accomplishment birdy!” Dick calls out.
“You make it sound like I live some kind of double life.” You noticed the nervousness that spread throughout the group. “Now if you excuse me I have a long and boring speech to write.”
You didn't wait for anyone else to speak as you quickly walked away, wanting to get space after the encounter with your family.
What was their deal?
The week leading up to your college graduation had you busy, as valedictorian not only did you have to give some bullshit speech but also collect all your ribbons and pins that will decorate your graduation robes. When you weren't working in that you were at Oscorp signing paperwork and figuring out how to collaborate with The Life Foundation, which wasn't easy. Any free time you had, which wasn't a lot, was spent at the warehouse with Peter, testing your abilities and putting them to use.
Neither of you brought up the gala, the kiss that almost happened but didn't, but some things did change. Peter stayed close, physically speaking, he always had a hand on you in some way either patting your back or brushing his hand against yours when handing you something. You never pulled away, if anything you leaned into it, you would never admit it but you were certainly touch starved and even the slightest touch made you happy.
Peter had taken some time to turn the abandoned warehouse into a ‘secret hideout’ he called it. With his interior designing skills, and your card, he turned the dingy building into a comfortable hangout spot. He put up fairy lights and fake leaves and vines to help ‘bring life’ , got an old record player from his basement and bought records, with his own money too.
Of course he questioned you when you mentioned fixing the ceiling and floor and you couldn't help but laugh at his expression when you told him that you just bought the warehouse along with the 2 other ones right next to it.
“I make a lot of money at Oscorp, trust me Peter, I wanted us to have something that Bruce can't track. Now give me those lights, only one of us can climb walls.”
Your actual family tried inviting you out and even tried making conversation but you always declined, not out of hate but because you were busy, which you were. So busy that Alfred had to physically drag you, with the help of someone else most of the time, to the kitchen to eat a proper meal and not snacks.
The night before the graduation you had reread the speech you wrote about a 100 times, memorizing it. Yes you would bring cards that had the speech on it but you tried to do speeches without looking down. Not only did it impress the shit out of people but it gave you a giant confidence boost, which really you didn't need but you never say no to comments that praised you and not your father.
You were doing last minute grammar checks and were struggling to keep your eyes open when you felt it. Something flowing through your body as if it was a part of your veins, you couldn't help the shiver that went through your body. You looked down at your arm, twisting it so your wrist was face up.
You couldn't see anything different but you could feel different, you're so focused on your wrist that you don't notice the knocking on your door or your name being called.
It isn't until you hear the sound of your doorknob being rattled that you snap your head up, they can't come in! You shoot an arm out and the door slams shut but you didn't move from your desk. You stared in shock at your doorknob that is now covered in..cobwebs?
“Excuse you!” Damien?
You jumped up from your desk in panic.
“Uh, just got out of the shower! You can't come in!” You yelled.
“Why didn't you answer when I was calling your name?”
“I just got out and didn't hear you!” You couldn't let him come in! “Look, I'm getting ready for bed, what do you want, Damien?”
You were greeted with silence.
“Damien-”
“Join us for breakfast tomorrow, we will all eat together before you go to your graduation.”
It was more of a statement than a request, you were going to argue but that's when you heard it. Pounding. Damien's heart was pounding in his chest and you could hear it. You couldn't help the way you softened, sure Damien could be an asshole but it wasn't his fault that he was raised by emotionally constipated adults.
“Ill try and be there.” You finally say.
The only thing you hear after is the sound of footsteps getting quieter and quieter, he is gone.
You slowly walked towards your door and let your fingers slide down the clump of webs.
“Peter's going to have a field day when he finds out..”
You woke up the next morning excited, today was the day you would finally graduate and start your new life! You may have forgotten to tell your family that you planned on moving out after everything. You found an okay apartment closer to the building where you'll be working, a new one was built for the collaboration with Oscorp and The Life Foundation.
You spent the morning getting ready and spending extra time into your hair and outfit before grabbing your bag with your graduation robes and heading out.
You walked into the kitchen to grab a quick bite when you heard a ring, someone was at the door.
You left the kitchen and to the door, opening it only to smile. “Hey!”
“Come one bug! We're gonna be late!” Peter grabbed your hand and began dragging you down the manor path towards a car where Uncle Ben and Aunt May were sitting.
“Don't you look all dressed up!” Aunt May reached back to pat your knee.
“Thank you Aunt May.” You felt your cheeks heat up a bit at the compliment.
“Can't believe you're both graduating, I remember when Peter brought you home for the first time and you were as nervous as a bull in a China shop!” Uncle Ben laughed as he began driving towards Gotham University.
“Oh hush now!” Aunt May lightly slaps Ben's shoulder. “We are just so proud of you both! And we have a surprise for you after everything!” The woman smiles.
“Thanks for being so generous with your hospitality..I can see where Peter gets his personality from.” You looked over at the man only to see him looking at you with a flustered expression, his ears and cheeks dusted in pink.
You couldn't help the flustered look that overcame your face as you quickly looked away out the window, why would you say that!? That's when you felt it. A hand on yours. You glanced down to see Peter's hand on yours and you quickly hid your smile with your other hand, you couldn't lie to yourself anymore.
You loved Peter.
When you arrived at the University both you and Peter took a few minutes to put both your robes on and said bye to Uncle Ben and Aunt May before heading with the other students.
You separated from Peter to stand in line alphabetically, having the last name Wayne had another disadvantage.
After calling everyone's name, the principal called your name as valedictorian and you walked up.
“Thank you. Thank you.” You set your hands on either side of the podium.
The speech itself was simple, thanking the university for helping you and how amazing it was to go to school there. You talked about the students as well, some boring talk that you zone out a bit.
It isn't until as your eyes scan the crowd that you notice a large group of people in the back.
It was your family.
You didn't stutter as you continued your speech before eventually coming to the end.
“Now get out there and do your best Gotham University graduates!” You take your hat and throw it into the air as everyone else does the same and the sound of claps fill the air.
You head off the stage and make your way to Aunt May and Uncle Ben who engulf you in a hug, and soon enough you feel Peter's hands wrap around your top.
When you let go you notice Peter's hand resting on the small of your back and you lean into him, a smile on your face.
You feel eyes staring into the side of your face, you know who's doing it but ignore them, this is your day afterall.
Unfortunately you don't get much time to talk to the Parker family for long before a shadow passes over you all. You looked over to see Bruce standing there along with Tim, Dick, Damien, and even Jason standing there.
“You must be Ben and May, my child has told me much about you.” Bruce holds out a hand and shakes hands with them both.
“Only good things I hope! You have raised one heck of a good kid!” Ben pats your shoulder softly.
“And you must be Peter.” Bruce glares daggers at Peter who still has his hand on you, in which the boy smiles nervously.
“I apologize for not having met you in person earlier but being the CEO of Wayne Enterprises has me busy.”
You can see how hard Bruce squeezes Peter's hand and you don't hide the scowl on your face before replacing it with a smile.
“Excuse us for a moment!” You quickly push Bruce and the others away from Peter and away from people in general.
“What the hell are you guys doing here?” You cross your arms over your chest.
“You seriously think we would miss your graduation? Come on baby bird! We wouldn't miss it for the world!” Dick goes to wrap around you, and you dodge out of the way.
“You all missed my high-school graduation, so why come to this one?”
The looks that passed over their faces made you almost laugh, almost.
“You didn't show up to breakfast.” Damien muttered.
You couldn't help the feeling of guilt that washed over you, you felt bad for not attending breakfast but you had to leave earlier than usual. “Damien-”
“Regardless.” Jason cut in. “We came to see you, and for all of us to go out together as a congratulations.”
Your gaze hardened. “Can't, I already made plans with the Parkers.” The feeling of guilt washes away as fast as it came.
“That's fine, they can come along!” Tim says, a smirk coming over his face.
You knew that you weren't going to win this argument so you just sighed, letting Dick wrap his arms around you this time.
Why were they doing this anyway?
This dinner was a horrible idea.
You had to watch as Aunt May and Uncle Ben try to talk to Bruce with Alfred being a mediator, meanwhile Peter was being interrogated by the boys. You sat beside Peter who was currently sweating bullets and trying not to be disrespectful.
“So..Peter.” Dick sent a sharp smile towards the man beside you. “How did you meet my baby birdy again?”
“Oh uh we met in middle school physics class! We sat together and I complimented their keychain. Next thing I know we shared a lot of classes together and we were usually never picked as partners so we have always been together.” Peter rambles on, clearly nervous but you never minded his habits.
You raised a hand to gently lay it on Peter's shoulder, which made his face go pink. “Peter's been there for me through everything, you should have seen his face when we saw each other at Gotham University!” You laugh lightly and lean into Peter's space more, you felt bad for setting him up to piss off your family but you would find a way to pay him back later.
“And you’ve been over to our house? Without our acknowledgement?” Damien asked, his arms crossed over his chest.
“Well..I uh…Alfred always let me in saying it was o-okay.” Peter stiffened under your touch.
“He doesn't need everyone's permission to enter our house and my room.” You glared at the boys.
“Besides, if it's that big of a deal I could always stay at his house like before.” You didn't even try to hide the smirk on your face as your words registered in your brother's minds, you could see the cogs turning.
“What.”
“Like before?”
“Wait like you stayed the night?”
You didn't get a chance to reply as Aunt May chimed in. “Oh yeah they've stayed the night a ton! At least once a week they come over and go to Peter's room to talk smartly!”
You couldn't help the smug grin that settled over your face at how quiet everyone became for the rest of the dinner. What a wonderful day it's been.
This was it.
Your first day as head scientist at The Oscorp Foundation, and you were sweating bullets.
So far everything was going okay, you arrived early to get your badge and your coat along with getting your fingerprints and such.
Then you met him.
Carlton Drake.
He walked oozing with confidence and was very charming, he answered your questions with ease and also seemed to match your wit. You already liked him.
“We are excited to have you work with us.” Carlton held out his hand.
“Thank you for trusting me with this, I won't disappoint you.” You shook his hand.
“We know you won't.” Dr. Connors pat your back gently before standing beside Carlton. “I have nothing but faith in you.”
“As do I. Connors has done nothing but sung your praises.” Carlton nods and they both head off after saying their farewells.
