Peer Pressure and Drug Abuse in Ultimate Spider-Man
Okay, okay, okay.
Has anyone else noticed how much it stresses peer pressure and drugs in “Ultimate Spider-Man” season 2, episode 26: Ultimate?
Like, seriously, just rewatching this episode and it just slapped me in the face that this is what this episode was about. Like, let’s say the goblin gas is like a drug. Drugs mess people up emotionally, physically, and mentally, which is exactly what happened to the team. They’ve become hostile and aggressive. They literally turn into big, green, and yucky monsters. And they believe that Goblin did them a favor by giving them the goblin gas. (Goblin is the drug-seller)
And then, literally, all throughout the episode, we have the goblinized team trying to get Spidey to become a goblin saying things like “It’s helped them” and “Spidey needs to use it for it to help him” And when he constantly refuses, they turn to hurting him emotionally and physically while STILL trying to pressure him into doing it with them.
They say things like “they weren’t ever really friends” and “that he stinks when he’s by himself, which he will be if he doesn't’ become a goblin” and tells him that they can be friends/a team again as long as he takes the goblin gas.
And then there is Spidey constantly saying no because he knows its wrong and is trying to help his team by reminding them who they are and that they were amazing people without the goblin gas/drug. #Spidey4Life
So, honestly, this episode is stressing a major problem in the world with teens, drug abuse, and peer pressure, and I find that freaking awesome! People say Ultimate Spider-Man is lame and too childish, but frick, you gotta see the underlining message. Drug abuse and peer pressure are hardly childish. It’s a real-life problem, and here it was perfectly demonstrated in a cartoon.
I’m still mind blown. Excuse while I go contemplate life.
