Gamma - Zion - Dispatch 087 (CLIP) Dispatch Recs | Ant TC1 DIS087 Gamma “The Zion EP” Gamma | A. Zion Gamma & Hydro | B1. 3 Days Gamma | B2. Streetheadz Gamma | C. Midnight Heat [digital bonus] Gamma | D. Empathy Control [digital bonus] Release Date | 02/02/2015 Returning for our first release of 2015, we proudly to welcome Gamma back to Dispatch for his first Dispatch EP as a solo artist. Having previously released on the label as part of the Spinline trio, Gamma brought the incredible “If U Go Away” to our Transit 2 compilation album and we knew it was only a matter of time before he would be back for a full release. Taking us into the New Year, the Zion EP is comprised of five tracks that delve deep into the senses, remaining pensive, yet always hard hitting. Title track ‘Zion’ sets the scene dramatically, with half time beats shuffling over subterranean low ends. Collaborating with Dispatch favourite Hydro, ‘3 Dayz’ follows on, raising the energy levels with suave overlapping bass grooves. ‘Streetheadz’ comes next, a percussive assault on the dancefloor, with strong support so far. ‘Midnight Heat’ contrasts the elements expertly, with sultry pads and soft vocals met by dark, growling mids and sharp stepping drum work ‘Empathy Control’ closes the EP with a slice of pure robotic funk, with a refined bassline cutting below jittering mechanic entities. Key support on this release comes from the likes of Icicle, Kasra, DLR & Safire.
Gamma interview & guestmix for KMag
Mark Gulacsi is part of drum & bass trio Spinline but last year he also started releasing and DJing as Gamma. With his gig at Kmag Presents Demand Records at Cafe 1001 this Friday (remember it's FREE to get in all night!) we tracked him down for a chat about his sound and a guest mix.
Please introduce yourself briefly...
My name is Mark Gulacsi. I was born in a small village in Romania where my father was working as a geologist. Later we went to Hungary because of the revolution and better opportunities. I was around 11/12 when I started making beats on my brother's old computer with Fast Tracker for my hip hop band! Then drum & bass came, I still remember we had a stereo that we were carrying everywhere so everyone in my "conservative" little town (Eger) could hear some Bad Company. I met Andris around 2001 and later we teamed up with Safair (Tactile). We made our first Spinline tune around 2003 and the rest is history! Gamma is a new project I started last year so we will see what the future holds.
You're also part of Spinline, how does collaborating compare with working on your own?
It's different. I like it when you have got more perspective but it's a nice feeling when you make something good on your own and get good feedback! It's only yours.
What's your studio setup like?
I have an iMac and I use software. I have SN10 speakers at the moment but I'm planning to get some big Dynadios - I used them in Hungary, they're the best speakers ever! I'd love to use more hardware but I need to save up a little bit more.
How did you hook up with Demand and what's it like working with them?
I met Carlos from Demand when we had our first booking in Switzerland a long time ago. We've had many tunes on his label and he's supported us since starting the label!
Got any releases / remixes in the pipeline we should look out for?
I have some tunes coming on Dispatch but that's still in progress. I recently won the Zero T & Steo - Walk Away remix competition. It's coming out on CIA recordings so I'm really happy about that! I just received my copy of the first Plasma Audio 12'' with an Icicle remix of Safire & Amoss feat Gusto - 4th State backed with my track "Chavland"! Loving the artwork!
Are you making any other styles of music apart from drum & bass?
I'm experimenting with some techno, trap and dubstep but the main vibe is still 170 bpm for me.
What's the best record you've made so far?
Spinline had two releases on Shogun Limited and my favourite one is "Radioactive". We also had a tune on Ram Records called "Run" and I'm still proud of that one. As Gamma I would say "Chavland" is the best so far but I also like "If U Go Away" which came on Dispatch Recordings as well as "I'm Sick" on Demand Records. But, as I said, Gamma is a new project so ask this question again next year and I'll have more!
Tell us a bit more about the mix you are giving away with us...
I tried putting in as many of my current favourite tunes as I could but there's always a tune that you miss out. It's not really a club mix, it's more for the music.
You're playing at our Kmag Presents Demand event at Cafe 1001, what can people expect from your set on the night?
It's gonna be a heavy night I haven't been playing around London for a while so I'm gonna play a hard set with some old Kemal and Digital & Spirit tunes! I can't wait!
What's the most memorable venue you've played at so far?
I would definitely say Outlook Moat Stage and the Boat Party in Croatia! Amazing vibes all round!
Any plans for an album?
I would love to make an album but I think I still need some time to develop and craft my own sound.
What do you get up to outside of music?
I'm a salesman at the moment. It was hard for me in the beginning when I came to the UK. I couldn't really speak the language so I needed time to get into it. I'm still learning but at least I can answer a few questions! Music is my life!
What producers and labels are you feeling at the moment?
Talented new people like Jaydrop, Bredren, Transparent, M-zine and Skeptics. Also DLR, Icicle, Hydro, Critical Music (Ivy Lab, Mefjus, Emperor), Dispatch Recordings and many more. I love techno and dark music but I listen to many different types of music to get inspiration!
