hello my dears... back to back spiders with a bright yellow spiny spider

sorry but i like spiders... the hasselt's spiny spider (Macracantha hasselti) has a female with a very large triangular abdomen. with six menacing looking spikes poking out from the edges

the spider is covered in white hairs and despite its irregular shape its still an efficient web builder

ive seen 4 different species of spiny spiders around my home but this one is by far the most common

#21 - Spiny Jewel Spider

Another good thing about the recent change from record-breaking heatwave to comparatively cool and damp weather - I had a couple of hours wait at one job, before the concrete was hard enough to seal, as opposed to the usual frantic dashing from job to job to spray them before they cracked in the heat.

( actually, I should add that this post was from February 2012 - every heatwave we've had since is even more record-breaking :P )

Naturally, I used this time to go exploring a patch of 'waste ground', currently being used to catch stormwater run-off. No doubt they'll get around to bulldozing and 'landscaping' it soon enough *sadface* but for the time being it's an interesting mix of dense shoulder-high tea-tree scrub, Eucalypts of various ages, and open grassy patches.

(actually, they still haven't, and it remains a good site for an assortment of inverts)
