so buck finds a ring in the attic of his new place while he’s cleaning, just trying to get rid of trash and dust and boxes of stuff the old owners left, and it’s silver and old and he doesn’t even think about it, just pockets it in the middle of all that mess and completely forgets about it, and then days pass and there’s this weird air around them and they get a call to a restaurant because a woman accidentally swallowed a ring baked into a dessert her girlfriend ordered for a proposal and then a call to a wedding at a chapel where the groom is having a heart attack because he lost his ring, and by the time they’re back at the locker room after that shift, everyone changing back into civilian clothes, buck pulls on his jacket and while he’s distracted talking to ravi the ring just slips out of his pocket and clatters on the floor.
and then eddie walks in after them, caught up in restocking the ambulance and closing shift shenanigans, and he sees it, just sitting there, and he picks it up and finds the irony in all of it, this whole day circling around rings, and he’s looking it over when hen comes in and catches him with it and asks what he’s doing with a ring in his hand, and his brain just short circuits for a second because yeah what is he doing with it, and he tells her as much because he just found it on the floor and somebody must’ve dropped it, and hen promises she’ll keep an ear out if anyone’s missing a ring but he should just hold onto it, so he puts it in his locker and forgets about it, like buck did.
weeks pass, no one mentions it again, until one shift when eddie forgets something in his locker and asks buck to grab it for him after their showers, and buck opens the locker and there it is, his ring, in eddie’s locker, and he comes back holding it confused out of his mind because what the hell is my ring doing in eddie’s locker? and he asks eddie straight up and eddie’s brain short circuits all over again because your ring? what do you mean your ring? Why do you have a ring? and buck tells him he found it in his attic and how did you get it? and eddie’s like i found it on the floor in the locker room weeks ago after that weird shift we had and why did you keep it? and buck just shrugs and suddenly they’re both just staring at each other because how do you explain something like this, how does a ring just keep finding its way back to them.
and buck is quick to believe and see signs in everything, but eddie never was. except maybe now. maybe now he’s starting to.
