Kind of, I think everyone recognizes Andraste as the messiah but they pray to the Maker since Andraste has no god-like abilities that can influence a faithful’s prayers (think God/Jesus) but both are extremely important to a character’s faith. To answer your question, it largely depends on your interpretation of Cassandra’s character. Based on her reactions to becoming Divine vs rebuilding the Seekers, I’d say she believes in free will/choosing for yourself rather then being set on a path. But Cassandra is also doubting her faith during the events of DA:I, she questions whether the Conclave and the Herald are part of a larger plan or just the results of the choices of a mad-man. Really its up to you how you represent her faith.

The reason for this confusion is that the writers have borrowed from Deism. Namely, the Maker plays no active role in world'y affairs but still cares deeply for his creations so through strong faith (praying, etc), a person can achieve salvation/ be at the Makers side after their mortal bodies perish. The difference between Deism and Andrastian is that there is still a very strong acceptance of the supernatural in Andrastian due to the existence of Demons and spirits in the physical world. It's also important to note that only some characters share this point of view, its a different interpretation of the Chant of Light similar to the different interpretations of the Bible. I hope I'm helping.

Yes, this is very helpful, thank you so much! So it sounds like people choose who to pray to; some like Cassandra would choose to pray to the Maker directly, and some would choose Andraste.

Under those terms, would someone like Cassandra believe that the Maker gave her choices, or set her on a path?

The Andrastian religion is, in my opinion, the equivalent of the Catholic Church, Andraste = Jesus, Maker = God, Divine = Pope. The relationships between these three entities and with the lay people is also similar to the Christian faith.

Thanks! It sounded that way to myself too—where I was having trouble was in the Maker having turned their back on people and not being involved, which implies it’s useless to pray to them and that you can’t assume any intentionality on the part of the Maker, neither of which is quite equivalent to Christianity as I learned it.
