Wing Commander James Edgar 'Johnnie' Johnson attacking a German airfield in France in 1943. Johnson was the highest scoring RAF pilot to survive the war (and I think the second highest scoring RAF pilot overall). He died of cancer in 2001.
The plane carried his initials and had a Maple Leaf on a white background just below the cockpit. Johnson, who was English, at the time was at the time in command of a Canadian Squadron (probably a RCAF squadron under RAF command). He would later claim that the Maple Leaf on his plane was painted green but I don't think that has otherwise been confirmed.
