Maybe something should be done to celebrate this huge milestone. Some thing like Ask the Cast or Ask the Devs. Yes, character asks are still open (for ALL characters who have spoken on-screen, including Betty and Muffet.), and we’re now willing to answer questions about the development of Strange Placements.
Read the full celebration under the cut.
The Creation of Strange Placements
Whichever image you consider to be the one that created Strange Placements, it doesn’t matter. They both were sent on the same day. April 15th. Now, today is a whole year after that. Not the biggest accomplishment, but hey, we’ve made it this far.
The day began with Chp sending Zurple a premise of a character with a... “different” trait. You can read this concept here.
Chp wanted to explore a concept of what would happen beyond LV 20, and combinations of things that had happened in his favorite fanfics. Previously, Chp had created spreadsheets attempting to create a LOVE system that expanded beyond 20.
Soon after discussing some ideas, Zurple hit with the concept that shows up at the top. He decided that in addition to this concept of a human, the concept could be combined with a roleswap.
The two agreed to combine the two ideas together, and made this into their AU.
Designing the Cast
Next, came the first design. They had to sprite Undyne the Flower. Neither of them really had any spriting experience, so the result was...
...Interesting.
Regardless, they accepted it and continued on to designing their protagonist.
...And thus, “Frolic” was created. Next order of business, they needed to redesign Frolic. Well, you all know how that turned out.
The original concept of Muffet was to be the caring grandmother in the Ruins. If you’ve read even the first part, you would know that this was changed swiftly. Though, it wouldn’t be fair if nobody got to see her original design.
To this day, they still can’t look back at it and not cringe. Also, Muffet wasn’t going to be Muffet, but rather Arachnava, Muffet’s grandmother, and Muffet would have been where Betty now is. Yeah, they had no idea what they were thinking either.
Honestly, through this whole year, the plot has been fully developed, and has changed quite a bit. Even though Chp and Zurple are much happier with how the plot has turned out compared to how it was, there is still so much subject to change.
Stuff that has changed throughout the course of the year:
-All the things mentioned above
-Undyne and Alphys were originally going to be adoptive children of [Asgore role]
-The names of the areas (The Treacherous Taiga, The Floodlands, The Zone of Fire, spoiler New Home name)
-The orders of the areas (The Zone of Fire comes before The Floodlands)
-The general backstory of the whole AU
-So, so much more that delves very far into spoiler territory
Overall, Strange Placements didn’t get as far in this year as they had hoped. But they had fun developing it, and preparing for the road far ahead. There’s a lot planned out, and they hope all of you will enjoy it!
Well, first off, apologies for the lack of an update yesterday, I seem to have forgotten that I said I’d do this.
The comic is, again, progressing slowly but surely. We still need to map out the Home Web, and make sprites for Muffet, but we are making panels of parts that we already have the assets for.
Unfortunately, due to nearly a week of lack of progress, I most likely have to say not to expect the part anytime soon. But when it does come, (and it will come, I promise) it will surely be worth the wait! I predict the overall part to clock in at >400 panels, plus it will include 4 more tracks to the OST.
That should be all that we need to cover for now, so stay tuned until March!
Just a reminder that we have a Discord server! If you’d like to chat with the SP Team or you just want to tack another AU Discord server on to your list, come and join us!
