So I have had Splatoon since it's launch date (or at least close to that date) and I am officially bored with the game. And changing what weapon I use in turf war won't make a difference. So I am going to make a list of changes I would make to Splatoon if I had the ability to. Splatoon team, take notes.
If you don't know what Splatoon is, Google it. You have the internet at your finger tips.
And yes, this is going to be heavily opinionated and may have potential bias.
1. Voice chat
Let's face the facts, this game needs voice chat. This game is mostly an online game with a lot of co-op. People need to be able to talk with each other and coordinate so people aren't left standing in one place wondering where to go. There has been so many times where I have stood still wondering where to go because my team mates end up covering every part of the starting area in 2 seconds flat. It would also help to know who has what area covered and where to go next. Plus having voice chat would make the matches more engaging. Silent matches are boring...BORING!
And yes, I am fully aware of the elephant in the room. People behave poorly over voice chat. This is the reason why there is no voice chat in Splatoon. I've got two things to say to that. One: People misbehaving over voice chat is UNAVOIDABLE. You can't control everyone and no one is perfect. Second: Technology has come a long way since the advent of voice chat. Program a bot to recognize swear words and bleep them out. Have it mute people if they start Mic spamming or getting inappropriate. And don't try to tell me Nintendo doesn't have the money. Bull crap hooey. You realize the majority of Nintendo's games are household names by now? *cough* Pokemon, Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, and Super Smash Bros *cough* For Pete's sake: POKEMON IS IN THE MICROSOFT WORD DICTIONARY!!! And jumping back to the technology; if Siri and Cortana can recognize sentences, then a bot can be programmed to recognize inappropriate words.
I mean come on; how much would it cost to do some quick programming, test it, and add it in? Honestly.
And I don't think the issues that pop up in other Voice Chat games would pop up here (or at the very least: not often). Splatoon keeps me in a good mood (despite losing all the time) and only swear at the game because I am alone and not talking to anyone. And I don't think the FPS dumbbells (you know who I am talking about) would play Splatoon.
2. Online stages
While I appreciate more and more being added in, there is one glaring issue: WE CAN NOT CHOOSE WHICH STAGE WE WANT TO PLAY IN (unless your playing with a friend). Splatoon has it's stages in rotation. Adding insult to injury; I commonly see the same stages in rotation. This has always gotten on my nerves. Maybe I don't want to play Urchin Underpass and Arowana Mall. Maybe I want to try out Moray Towers. I'd prefer to choose a stage rather than be forced into one of two choices that I can't make. But unfortunately this can't be fixed unless another issue is fixed. And that issue would be:
3. The online servers
This game does not have a lot of servers for online play. There have been times where I have gone to join a match and have had to wait through another match. This game needs a few more servers for online matches. I don't think a few extra servers is going to bankrupt Nintendo. I mean jeez, they shut down support for the Wii and DS. They should certainly have enough money by now.
4. More weapons
Getting off the touchy areas; I feel this game needs more weapons. This goes for actual weapons and weapon types. More weapons is self explanatory, so I don't think I have to go to in depth. Ultimately it boils down to we need some more variations. Now for weapon types; I would like to see stuff like swords and gauntlets. Swords could instant splat opponents, but the ink it lays down comes out in a crescent shape and doesn't cover much. Yeah, it's basically another octo-brush, but it looks different and inks differently enough to be unique. Gauntlet style weapons could be similar. They could be very powerful, but don't cover as much ground. Ultimately this would mix things up with how weapons appear. It's kind of boring to see blasters over and over again.
5. More clothing
Yeah, I kind of getting sick and tired of seeing Amiibo gear, squid girl gear, and leather jackets. Although I probably contributing to the issue considering that my character wears a leather jacket... either way! there needs to be more clothing options for the inklings. I don't know Splatoon team. Add in stuff like costumes, armor, jumpsuits, wet suits, bathing suits, super suits, tuxedos, dresses, more refrence clothing, clothing of other Nintendo characters, etc. There is so much you can add in if you just come up with some ideas.
6. More Inkling customization
Eye and skin color is not enough. I want to be able to change my inkling's hair style and hair color. Facial markings would also be nice. The ability to make my headgear invisible would be nice too. You could also add in the ability to be an octoling. They function just like the inklings.
7. Expand the story
It's a shame this games story mode is so pathetic. The game has a very rich lore that can actually get pretty disturbing at times. Did you know Splatoon is actually a post apocalyptic game? Add that on to your prediction timeline MatPat from game theory. Anyways: it's a shame to see the story potential go to waste because the Splatoon team and Nintendo want to make this an online only game. An expanded story mode would give people sick and tired of losing in turf war or ranked matches a break and allow them to relax. It would also help if the game if the servers went down for a bit. People would have something to do in the meantime. Plus I really want to know more about how the Splatoon universe got the way it is.
Please note that I do not hate Game Theory. That was just a refrence I wanted to throw in.
8. Give splatfest some variety and consistency
Splatfest needs to change itself up. I am getting sick of seeing the same layout and hearing the same music over and over again. The biggest thing is that we need new songs for splatfest. It's not hard Splatoon team.
And like I just said, Splatfest needs to be more consistent. Popularity should not be an on and off factor deciding team victory. The number of battle victories should decide the winning team. It honestly feels like I am being trolled by the Splatoon team. This is the key reason why I don't participate in splatfest anymore.
And here is a question I would like to raise: Did Hasbro approve the Autobot Vs. Decipticon Splatfest? Also, that theme for splatfest just doesn't make sense and it has the potential to start flame wars.
Aaaaannnnd.... I think that's it for my list of changes I would make to Splatoon. If you couldn't tell, these are my opinions. You may or may not agree with me. And since that is the case; What changes would you make to Splatoon? Or do you agree with everything I have said here. Please share your opinions in the comments below.
All I ask is that you stay calm, mature, and respectful.
Stay frosty everyone!
Sincerely,
ChaoticTempleKnight
Maybe this will do better here on Tumblr. This got jack for comments or favorites on DA. And if you couldn’t tell by now, NO, I do NOT hate Splatoon.
