Catch Up Here
You had just finished another test for the doctors when your nurse walked in, telling you that you had visitors. A small smile crept up on your face. You had been anxiously waiting all day for Sam and Dean to arrive, the two being the only ties in your life that you knew of.
Dean’s head peeked in and gave a half wave, checking to make sure they weren’t disturbing the examination.
“No, we had just finished,” The doctor said kindly, stepping out of the room as the two boys tripped over themselves to get in.
You snorted in amusement, easily seeing how they were brothers when Dean shoved Sam’s huge frame off him and Sam made a noisy protest. They smiled sheepishly at you, sitting down in the spots they had been in the day before.
“You feeling any better? Remember anything?” Sam asked, looking hopeful.
“Not yet,” You winced at his disappointed look. Dean whacked Sam’s head a little, giving him a look.
“Dude, she just woke up yesterday. Cut Y/N some slack.”
“Sorry, Sorry. I just….” Sam shook himself to rid the thoughts from his mind. It just made you more curious. “Anyway, what was the doctor doing?”
“Just making sure my concussion wasn’t worse than he previously thought,” You rolled your eyes lightly. “I don’t feel much different from yesterday so I don’t know why he has to keep checking on me.”
“It’s his job,” Dean chuckled. “Quacks do what they do.”
“I wish he’d do it somewhere else.”
“At least your sass hasn’t changed,” Dean mumbled. You perked up at the mention of some part of your personality.
“I’m sassy?” You asked curiously.
“Yeah,” Sam smiled, looking down. “Always keep me and Dean on our toes.”
You blushed at the pride of that thought. It fitted a small piece of the puzzle in your scrambled mind; albeit a small piece but a piece you needed none the less. You looked at the two brothers again, the pull of familiarity there in your mind. It’s like knowing a name on the tip of your tongue but your brain doesn’t cooperate so instead you sit there in silent suffering trying to remember that one name.
That’s how you felt right now.
You couldn’t remember a single damn thing but something here was familiar. You just couldn’t put your finger on it. A small sigh rocked your shoulders as you twiddled with your fingers.
“Hey,” Dean’s rough voice asked, a warm hand gently squeezing your shoulder. “What’s going on in that head of yours?”
Sam smiled slightly at the familiar expression Dean used. It was one his brother said often since you normally got lost in thought and got this furrow in your brow when those thoughts went deeper than surface layer consciousness.
“I just...” You bit your lip, suddenly feeling very overwhelmed with the situation. The terror that had escaped you the previous day came flooding back along with the frustration that you couldn’t remember a damn thing. Tears blurred your vision but you forced them back.
Unfortunately, a half chocked back sob escaped, startling the two men into action. Dean’s grip on your shoulder tightened and held you like an anchor. You let out a harsh shuddering breath, trying to regain some control.
A large hand came into your line of sight and gently unclenched your fist, his other hand soothing the red crescent indents that stained your palm. Your eyes flickered up to Sam’s, his eyes staring back at you with concern.
“It’s okay, m’right here,” He whispered and suddenly, the fog and crushing weight of uncertainty on your chest disappeared. You knew everything was going to be alright because those eyes held promise and determination. You were safe with those eyes watching over you and that adorable quirk of his lips effectively reassuring you that everything was gonna be okay.
After your mini-meltdown, the boys did everything they could to take your mind off those depressing thoughts. You found yourself in stitches each time Dean talked about the prank wars that have happened between him and Sam. You asked if there were any more pictures you could look at, hoping to get a reminder on somethings. Sam had hesitated before Dean took out his phone and handed it to you.
Picture after picture that familiarity pounded into your skull like an unfair game of tug-of-war. It kept going back and forth, your blank mind winning in the end. It was obvious, however, that you were ingrained in these two men's lives. You were seen as important or else they would have moved on somewhere else if the pictures told you anything.
You were drawn in by their adventures and where you fit into them, smiling at the nonsense the three of you had gotten into. But, you knew there was something Sam and Dean both were hiding from you. Sam’s, you felt, dealt with you more personally. You drew a vague conclusion that maybe you two had history together but you were thankful neither brother brought it up.
You could barely tell up from down let alone how you felt emotionally for a guy you “just met”. You couldn’t deny your heart pounded when he touched you or how your face flushed hot when he shot that dimpled smile in your direction. Sam made you feel things that shook that steady ground you were trying to build yourself on.
The boys stayed until Dean grew hungry for real food and not the cafeteria nonsense. They decided to just go home afterward, promising to see you again the next day if you’d have them. You readily agreed, hungry for more information on who you were. In that hospital bed all alone, you could feel your mind swirling with random thoughts and snippets of the conversations you had.
Your eyes trailed to the window, watching the final fading of the afternoon dew drift away as the sun peeked into your room. The bed, while stiff, offered comfort to your aching back and you were left wondering what got you so messed up in the first place. A young bluebird landed on your windowsill and tweeted softly, the sound oddly changing your brief paranoia and fear as it started singing.
The noise lulled you into an exhausted state, curling up on your left side and watching the small bird hop forward than back. Sleep washed over you like a wave, taking you under and sending calm through your brain, shutting down till you did as well.
You smiled as you felt a warm kiss on your temple. You turned and saw Sam smiling at you with that full dimpled grin.
“What?” You asked softly, leaning on the lore book you’d been reading and tilting your head at him. “What’re you looking at me like that?”
“I love you,” He confessed easily. Your lips moved as an immediate reaction to those words till you were mirroring his smile.
“Love you too, dork.”
“I have a bad feeling about this hunt,” Sam sighed, looking down at the text you were reading. “I don’t know why but I just have a bad feeling.”
“Hey,” You got his attention and kissed his nose. “S’okay. It’s a simple Salt & Burn.”
“When is it ever a simple Salt & Burn?”
“You’ll see,” You assured him, reaching up and running a hand through his silky chocolate locks. “We’ll be fine.”
Sam sighed and rested his forehead on your shoulder. You kissed his head and scratched at his scalp, trying to reassure Sam from the feeling you both felt. It twisted in your gut and you felt like you were lying to him but you prayed everything went the way it was supposed to go.
You woke up were a jerk, chest heaving a little and eyes flickering around the room. You weren’t at a long war table with a library that carried billions of old books. The dusty smell was gone and replaced with the disgustingly clean antiseptic scent. And the warmth of Sam’s body was gone too, leaving you chilled in the cold hospital room.
You let out a breath and peered at the chair Sam had been sitting in earlier that day, now with more questions than answers; the opposite of what you wanted from their latest visit.
