i think everything really clicked for me when i saw that post about jewish showrunners and writers borrowing the aesthetics of catholicism but still writing an inherently jewish history with it. supernatural is jewish. you can’t divorce it from its jewish roots. it became less so after kripke, gamble, bedlund, and others left while others took over the story but...it’s still all there at the foundations.

saw a post that got me thinking. the gist of it was dean was OOC from s13 onward, specifically because he pointed his gun at kids (kaia and jack) and this is wrong because dean would never “turn into his father.” normally i would agree that dean wouldn’t pull a gun on a kid if he was in the right mental space but the whole point is that he isn’t in the right mental space when either of these moments occur. 

in fact, we’ve already seen dean pull a gun on a kid and actually murder him in cold blood. castiel points out “the dean i know never would have shot that kid.” in that moment, cas is the audience proxy, pointing out to dean (and reminding us) what is really going on. a dean winchester, free of the mark’s influence, never would have killed cy styne, even if he did think cy would turn out like his family.

so, anyway, at the start of s13 cas is dead and he’s lost mary and doesn’t even know if she’s alive. he’s most certainly still traumatized, even though cas is back when the episode “the bad place” occurs. kaia is someone who can possibly help them rescue mary, who dean hasn’t even allowed himself to hope is alive because that hope is too painful for him. because everyone dean loves leaves him even if they do come back. what dean does is obviously wrong and we’re supposed to feel that wrongness. maybe it would have been addressed more if wayward had gotten picked up, who knows. they did sort of allude to it when kaia was rescued, i think, but i don’t exactly remember. 

now, on to the jack incident(s). dean pulling a gun on jack and being willing to sacrifice him are yet more examples of “the dean i know wouldn’t do this.” hell, dean’s probably thinking the same thing himself. the scene in “moriah” is clearly meant to parallel the binding of isaac, and like abraham dean "fails” the test and is unable to kill his son. unlike abraham, though, dean struggles with the decision and ultimately chooses not to kill jack (while in the biblical story, an angel is sent down to intervene and stop abraham from killing isaac; also interesting to note that abraham and isaac don’t speak to each other again after this). also, unlike the biblical story, a vengeful chuck kills him anyway. in “unity,” he’s willing to give everything/everyone up (including his OWN BROTHER, who he raised and who he’s died for countless times) to get off chuck’s carnival ride. 

dean’s entire perception of his own existence (and the world around him and the people in it) was completely shattered by chuck and he’s been drowning in it the whole season. his actions in “unity” are borne of his desperation, and they’re the rising action before the climax that comes in “despair,” when he has all these preconceptions ripped away from him by cas’s love confession. 

dean is not the angry destructive creature either of his fathers molded him into. he was never just john’s blunt instrument, nor was he the angry destructive cold-blooded killer chuck wanted him to be. he was so full of love for the world that just by being himself, he taught a celestial being older than time itself what love was. 

he didn’t turn into john, not in the way fandom is using the phrase. if you mean he turned into john in the sense that deeply traumatic experiences caused him to lash out and react in a way he wouldn’t normally act if he was of the right mind, then sure. there’s an argument for that.

HELP RHAGS ROM LIKE S10 OR SOMETHING HE GETS TURNED INTO A DEMON BECAUSE HE MADE A DEAL WIRH CAIN (yk, the guy from the Bible because he’s just here and also he’s a Beekeper) AND WENT MURDER HUNGRY UNTIL HE GOT KILLED. But yeah otherwise they hunt monsters and the celestial beings drag them into ahit. And I’d say he’s Not dead but also literally everyone in this series dies at some point. I think dean’s death count is over 100 bc of a Timeloop Incident also they hunt monsters bc Monster Bad (with some exceptions)
