One of my (white, gay) male friends posted a Facebook update about wanting his next party to be "queenciñera"-themed. Have any of you heard of this? It sounds really appropriating and offensive to me--I'm thinking it may be drag incorporating/mocking the tradition of the quinceañera. I tried looking it up using the term but didn't get far at all. I'm planning to call him out on it.
If he's not Latinx (and even then, quinceañeras are not a pan-Latinx thing, so that's complicated too) then I agree, it sounds really appropriative.
I've never seen one quite like this, but I have seen one too many gross, racist "culturally themed" parties thrown by white people. The idea of this is actually making me feel really sick. I'm so tired of our traditions and cultures being homogenized, fetishized, and used for the enjoyment of white people. All I can think about now is how hilarious this white guy must think this is, and how his guests will show up in brownface and cheap sombreros.
Why doesn't he look up what type of white he is and hold a birthday party surrounding that?
