‘Hey Dean.’ Sam said and sat on Dean’s side of a bed. ‘Can I be Batman for tomorrow’s Halloween?’ ‘You want to be Batman?’ Dean was shocked. Sam never was a fan of him. ‘Yeah. You see. When we were at the park I talked with some kids about him. They said he’s cool and they’re gonna be Batmans too and maybe we could all meet as Batman team.’ Sam was so happy just thinking about this. ‘Yes, of course you can be Batman. You can be whoever you want Sammy.’ Dean didn’t tell he wanted to be Batman so bad. He had already a costume. When John said this Halloween they can spend having a little fun he was so pumped. But he couldn’t say no to Sammy seeing how happy he was. ‘That’s great! And what’s your costume?’ Sam was really excited. ‘I’ll be Superman.’ Dean said first name he came up with.
Next day. 4pm. Halloween.
Sam dressed as Batman, Dean as Superman. ‘You ready Sammy?’ ‘Yeah almost. But Dean, can we have a little fun together first?’ ‘You don’t have to ask. Come outside.’
They ran and jumped around the place. Smiling and yelling. Pretending to be heros. After a few minutes Dean climbed the shed. He propelled himself and jumped off of it. He felt like real Superman. Like he can fly. It was quick but amazing feeling. When he was on the ground he noticed Sam’s not there. Sam was already on the shed.
‘Sam get down from there.’ He said calmly. ‘I want to jump like you.’ ‘Sam, you’re only 5, you’re too little, please. Dad will be angry.’ But it was too late. Sam jumped off the shed and started crying. Dean in a second stood by his brother. ‘My arm. It hurts.’ Sam sobs. ‘It’s okay Sammy. I got this.’ Dean took his little brother and put him on handlebar of his bike. He knew it’s not safe but they had to go to the E.R as fast as it’s possible.
Sam broke his arm. Doctors patched him up and he had to wear a cast. They came back to their temporary house.
‘I’m sorry you didn’t go to the park to your friends.’ Dean said when he put Sam to the bed. ‘It’s okay. It’s my fault. And you’ll have troubles with dad because of me.’ ‘I won’t. You don’t have to be worried about it. Now go to sleep, Sammy.’ Dean kissed his little brother’s forehead.
‘Thank you, Dean.’ Sam said when Dean was almost out of the room. ‘For what?’ ‘For this day. Even if I broke my arm it was the best and the funniest day. And for letting me to be Batman.’ He stopped for a moment and smiled at Dean. ‘I saw your costume. You wanted to be Batman too. But you let me.’ His smile looked so bright at his little face. ‘It’s okay, Sammy. I can be Batman next year.’ He smiled back at his brother and left the room.
The truth is that he really wanted to wear this costume because it was probably the first and the last Halloween they had. But seeing Sammy’s smile, laugh and happiness was everything to Dean.
