Fun Fact: Hiccup totally crushed on Joise. He would spend long hours in the Mechanics Bay as a child (to keep him contained and so that Gobber could keep an eye on him). He was still a kid when Jo started working at the Bay as a teenager. He thought she was the most awesome of people. Gobber started having her keep Hiccup by her side, since she was somehow able to keep him in line better than anyone else. As time went by, their relationship solidified into one of a sibling variety, due to the fact that Jo only ever saw him as her ‘kid brother’ coupled with the fact that as Hiccup entered his teens, he started having eyes for a certain blonde up-and-coming cadet. Most people think Hiccup and Jo have something going on secretly though, because they’re so close and spend so much time together. The rumors annoy the two, but also makes Hiccup wonder sometimes what would be different if he had met Jo when he was a little older.

Hi okay i have been confused for the longest time about Stoick countering Hiccup's "How is that irresponsible?" with "Because war is what he wants". It didn't make sense to me. Do you think you might be able to clarify what Stoick meant? Thanks.

As I see the exchange of the conversation, what is irresponsible about Hiccup is that he’s trying to do something Stoick knows cannot be done. Hiccup is being irresponsible by running off, doing his own thing, and ignoring the chief’s experience, authority, and word. As Stoick grumbles later, he likens Hiccup’s actions to “mutiny.”

Hiccup’s goal is to talk to Drago rather than prepare for war. Stoick, the Chief of Berk, warns Hiccup that Drago is a madman, and makes an island-wide decree to pen up the dragons and fortify Berk. Even while the Hooligans are carrying out Stoick’s orders, Hiccup flies out and leaves to talk to Drago anyway. Hiccup is disobeying a direct order from the highest authority on Berk.

The thing with Hiccup is that, as Stoick’s bemoaned since HTTYD, “he doesn’t listen.” Hiccup does not readily follow authority, but rather will impulsively charge off to do his own thing based upon his current emotions. Hiccup’s choice to talk to Drago is another one of those spit-of-the-moment times he chooses to ignore his leaders and do what he emotionally thinks is best. Hiccup’s “great plan” is to simply fly back and land on the ship of the dragon hunters, get taken straight to Drago, and have a chat right in the middle of Drago’s camp. It’s not well-thought, it’s very dumb, and if he had gone through with it, it probably would have gotten him killed. That’s sort of irresponsible. It’s certainly naive.

Hiccup doesn’t understand why this is irresponsible, though. Caught up in the passion of trying to stop a war - a very good motivation - he gets frustrated that Stoick would chase after him and tell him to stand down. Stoick calls Hiccup running off on his own irresponsible, and Hiccup immediately balks, “I’m trying to protect our dragons and stop a war! How is that irresponsible?”

When Stoick shouts, “Because war is what he wants, son!” he is pointing out that Hiccup’s idea to go off talking to Drago is foolish and it’s based on no experience. Stoick is the one who has experience and knowledge of Drago Bludvist. Stoick is the one who knows how dangerous Drago is. Stoick is the leader of the island who has been leading for decades and probably knows what is best. That’s why he responds as he does. And because he knows that one sentence will not be sufficient for his lightning-foot son, Stoick subsequently enters a narrative explaining exactly why trying to go to talk to Drago would be a fool’s errand. He describes how Drago, twenty years ago, assassinated an entire room of Viking chieftains - at once.

“Because war is what he wants!” makes sense in the context because Hiccup is irresponsibly, passionately, defying his father to enter peace talks that will never happen.
