CX Race Report: SPOOKY CROSS at Irvine Lake
I just uploaded the action-packed video of the entire race HERE.
This was the 3rd race of the season for me. And this was the race where it finally all came together for a good result.
Except for the start. My start was a disaster. And that was despite the fact that I was starting somewhat near the front row. I just got swallowed immediately by the horde of fearless Men B warriors.
So again I had to claw my way through the pack, which is always a blast! There was so much wheel to wheel action, battles everywhere, passing moves left and right; it's an amazing sport. I love it!
You don't necessarily realize it when you’re non-stop fighting for positions, but your heart rate is pinned in the red. I think I beat my record for cumulative anaerobic minutes on that race. Which is a great! I could never unlock that much intensity in a canned workout session.
And that course was so much fun. Super fast and flowy, plenty of technical stuff, 3 sand pits, off-camber corners to drift though everywhere and some climbing at last! I actually enjoyed racing that course more than the XC course they do there in the summer.
I'm glad I was able to stay out of trouble this time. It's more difficult that it looks to chain it all together without mistakes. There's so much going on, so many details to get right. One misstep and that's easily 4 positions lost. And that can take a whole lap claim back. But that’s addictive, that constant focus that is required to chain it all. When it puts you in the zone, it's the best feeling.
The teenagers beat us though! Andrew (1st) and Brody (3rd) were flying. Which is even more impressive considering that, at their age, they can't benefit from the virtues of recovery beer. Doug got 2nd, I got 4th and Devin (not on the podium pic) was 5th.
Now, what if I had also a good start at the next race?
