Topic 3.3 : Future Trends
Important notes:
The web and data stops being just on computers, but becomes mobile, embedded and embodied (Lever, 2010)
RFID = Radio Frequency Identification Tags - data signatures for every single thing like passports, parking stations, etc
Semantic Web = linking ideas and things
Communication and collaboration includes non-human partners (eg smart fridges) to make things more efficient (Lever, 2010)
Syntax is how you say something and semantics is the meaning behind what you said (Sporny, 2007)
The internet = computers can talk to one another but don't know the meaning (Sporny, 2007)
The web = a huge document storage and retrieval system (Sporny, 2007)
If we could get computers to recognise what is in a webpage, they could learn what we are interested in. It would change from computers passively helping us to actively helping us (Sporny, 2007)
Reflections:
It is amazing to think how the web will change over the next 5, 10 or 20 years. My guess is that it will all go mobile. Within the next five years, everyone will carry around mobile devices which access the internet, mail, social networking sites, games, etc. They will all be touch-screens. Maybe 10 years from now we will all have smart fridges where the fridge scans what you remove and don't return so it automatically knows you've run out and will put it on the shopping list. Maybe in 20 years we will all access the internet via holographic images suspended in mid-air like in sci-fi movies. It's exciting but also frightening.
