Spotlight Monday
Good Morning Everyone!
This week I have decided to shine a little light on more then just one person. Recently this first group of young people came together as one in supporting a fellow team member who’s family has received some upsetting news. The Mattituck Varsity Wrestling team started the New Year off with an amazing first step. In honor of Mrs. Becker, a team member’s mom, the team made the choice to take part in shaving their heads to show their respect. Cancer is unfortunately a horrible disease to face even when your not personally fighting it. As a young teen who has also faced this disease as a supporter of my father, I can easily make the statement that support from fellow peers helps takes a little bit of the pain away. The rest the of Teenfork staff and I would personally like to wish Mrs. Becker and her family the best of luck, we too know you can win this battle!
Also this Wednesday, Greenport High School is honoring Ryan Creighton by retiring his high school basketball jersey. Ryan was a member of the Varsity Basketball team for five years and by the time he graduated in 2009 he made sure his name was well known. He was then Long Island’s all time scoring leader and he was also second in the state. To earn this title Creighton had to work hard and score a total of 2,799 points throughout his career. Ryan not only led the Porters to three consistent trips to the state final four, but also led the Porters to their first state championship game. Ryan Creighton was not just in love with the sport but he was also dedicated. Ryan spent many nights after practice in the gym for extra training and he also spent some weekends with a personal trainer. GHS is very proud to call this previous high school students one of their own. Congratulations Ryan!
Last but not least, I would like to wish my best friend and the creator of this website a early Happy Birthday! She is a junior at Greenport High School and besides being the editor of this website she also takes on extra activities such as yearbook, DECA, and the school newspaper. She is an outstanding student who takes part in more then just one advanced placement classes. Skye Gillispie is not just a bright student but she is an amazing person all around and this friday she will be turning 17! So Happy Birthday Skye, I hope its an amazing one!

Spotlight Monday: Brette Rosen
Good morning!
Today’s article is for all those high school students wondering what would it be like to graduate early and get out of here. This thought is a common one for many high school students who are running away from situations they THINK they can not handle. I once felt the same way, but soon realized I was not prepared to face reality.
Im not sure that I have all the answers to what it would be like to graduate early, but I know someone who can at least give you some insight on what it is like to take on the extra work and double up.
In 2012, the soon to be junior at Mattituck High School, Brette Rosen made the decision to double up and attempt to graduate early. Brette originally decided to graduate early because she knows exactly what she wants to pursue in life, photography.
Brette also wanted to take on this task due to the fact that she wanted to escape the issues she had faced throughout high school. She didn’t have a great start in junior high and it continued through freshman and sophomore year. Graduating early was the only option in her mind. She returned back to school in September of 2012 as a junior whose face appeared in many senior classes.
As Brette started to fill out college applications, she took a moment to sit back and think about the choice she was making. After a long thought, she realized that she finally had an answer to the question that many people had asked her many times before, the question “Why?” Brette Rosen had finally come to the conclusion that she herself did not know why she was choosing to rush her life and thought how much damage could one more year really bring her?
She realized that although she had a lot to hate about high school, she also had a lot to love such as chorus, DECA and the many other activities that she takes part in. Although her choice of graduating early is now out of the picture, Brette is still taking on the stress that comes from taking the intense senior classes. Brette will finish out the year and enjoy her senior year doing all the fun activities that she loves to do.
After graduating with her fellow classmates in 2014, she plans to take a year off and continue her exploration of Israel from this past Christmas break. She then plans to attend the Fashion Institute of New York and graduate with a BFA in photography.
I would now like to leave you all with some advice from Brette herself and a few of her amazing photos.
“This whole experience has taught me to be completely open minded in everything you do because you never know what the future holds. I was absolutely set on leaving high school a year early, and then had a complete change of heart. So yes, it’s good to make plans for the future, but don’t freak out if they don’t work out or you change your mind about something. Go with your gut and everything will be okay.” -Brette Rosen

Spotlight Monday: Frank Musto
Good Morning Everyone!
Although Mondays are considered the worst day of the week, I hope you all have started it off on the right foot! Each Monday I hope to shine a little light on someone and give them the “Spotlight for the Day.” This person may be a student, a teacher or even someone from the community. Recently we have all heard about the the sad tragedy in Newton Connecticut. This event has caused the pain that lives within the hearts of many families and friends. It has also caused fear in children all around the nation. Many kids are now afraid to go back to school because they wonder if their life will be next or if today be the last time they say goodbye to their parents.
Many people have taken charge to help these kids work through their fears and as of this past week, Greenport High School has someone that kids call their hero.
Frank Musto was once a NYC police officer. After completing many years on duty, he retired and became a part of Greenport High School as a substitute teacher. He is very well known around the halls of GHS and many of the students at our school adore him.
Mr. Musto have recently made the decision to volunteer his free time to help make our students feel safe. He has volunteered to sit in the main entrance of our school where all visitors must pass and now sign in before venturing off to any other parts of the school.
Mr. Musto has chosen to do this without receiving any compensation. He is doing this for us out of complete kindness! We would like to take this time to applaud Mr. Musto and let him know that we as students of GHS truly appreciate him.
Thank you for your time and tune in next week for another Spotlight Monday, you never know it could be you!
