A Message from The President: “I Am Sorry”
There have been claims, made widely by both the media, pundits and politicians, that the Federal Government has delayed decisive action too long – that I, the President, have underestimated the threat this pandemic poses to our nation for far too long.
I am here today to admit fault. I don’t do it too often, but I bow my head and ask forgiveness. Precious time was lost early on in the fight. Precious lives will be lost as a consequence of our, of MY inaction.
I was blinded by an over-concern for the economy, for holding up the country’s optimism and unwavering belief in the future, which is such an important part of who we are as a nation. But wishful thinking and “business as usual” cannot scare away this threat. Only extreme caution, preparedness and solidarity could have. And now, at this point only a coordinated effort led by the Federal Government can hope to get us through this crisis.
I will chart out a course for all Americans. You can trust me. You can believe me. Nothing is more important than our mutual trust in these most trying times. And that begins with an honest and earnest admission of failure, and a promise of credibility.
Today we turn a page, we start anew. Together.
