William Spratling "Father of Mexican Silver"
William Spratling, was born in 1900 in the Finger Lake region of New York and studied architecture and later taught architecture at Auburn and Tulane. Spratling was a part of the bohemian community of New Orleans and was good friends with William Faulkner who he collaborated with on the book, Sherwood Anderson and Other Famous Creoles. Faulkner wrote the book and Spratling provided the caricatures. Published in 1926, this is a rare book to find in the first edition as only 250 copies were printed!
In 1929, Spratling purchased property in Taxco and moved there. Taxco was the historic location of some of the oldest silver mines in the Americas, but had never been a center for craft. Being an artist, he hired a goldsmith from Iguala who produced Spratling's designs in sterling, tin, and copper. From that, an apprenticeship system grew that established Taxco as a center for artistic craftsmanship. In the early 40's, Spratling lost control of Spratling y Artesanos and the business ended. He moved to a ranch south of Taxco and established a new business working with silversmiths and craftsmen.
Spratling also incorporated native materials such as rosewood, copper, brass, turquoise and amethyst. In his later period, he designed very little silver jewelry and focused more on objets d'art and utilitarian objects. His designs became sparer and more streamlined reflecting the Mid Century design aesthetic.
I was fortunate to acquire these rosewood and silver salt and pepper shakers out of California. They are in beautiful condition and would make a lovely addition to any collection.
