Tutorial: DIY "dylusions" spray ink made from gel based food coloring!
I had really been wanting some of those awesome Dylusions spray inks that everyone seems to be using, but there's no way I could afford all the colors I want.
Beautiful, right?
I did some research and found out I could make some of my own similar ink spray with gel based food coloring. I had seen several tutorials online for making alcohol inks with it- but none with water based spray ink.
I wanted a water-soluble spray ink though, so I gave it a shot, and it worked! At first I was afraid the gel wouldn't mix in with the water, but after some stirring and shaking, I was in business.
This is what success looks like.

What you need: -A spray bottle. You can use an old one you have lying around at home, or you can find them at craft stores. If you're buying in bulk, you can get them for really cheap online! - Gel based food coloring. You probably won't find this in a grocery store, but you will have better luck at the cake decorating section at a craft store. You can also find some good deals online as well. If you want to try using liquid food coloring, which is more common, it will work but I don't think the colors will be nearly as saturated. - Water.
I was able to find a pack of 12 different gel food colorings at Michael's for $14.99. If I had been patient enough to order them online and wait for them to come to me, I probably could have saved a few bucks. I found a pack of 12 spray bottles on Amazon for only $8 with free shipping.
(A set of 12 Dylusions sprays sells for $60, so that's not too bad!)
1) Use a popsicle stick, or an xacto, or q-tip, or whatever you have available to scoop the gel into the bottle. I put probably about 1.5 to 2 teaspoons of gel. 2) Very slowly fill the bottle halfway with water. 3) Stir the gel. 4) Screw the lid on, and shake from side to side until the gel has mixed in with the water. (I shake it side to side because shaking it up and down can cause clogging in the sprayer.) There may be a few little remnants of gel at the bottom, but that's okay. 5) Test it out and see how it looks! Add more water if you want to thin out the color. Add more gel if you want the color to be more saturated.
Easy, right?
So here's what I made with them tonight.
