so you make it gentle.

you press a kiss to his shoulder first, then another, slow enough that he stirs awake, mumbling something under his breath. when he blinks at you, confused and soft and a little wary, you whisper it. “happy birthday, kurt.” just that. no big reveal, no loud excitement but just his name sits between you like something fragile.

for a second he just stares, like he doesn’t know what to do with it, like no one’s ever handed him something so careful before.

by the time evening settles in, he’s quieter than usual, but it’s a different kind of quiet and softer. you bring out the smallest cake you could find, something almost silly in its simplicity, with a single candle pressed into the middle. he actually laughs, a short, surprised sound that feels rare and precious.

you make him sit down anyway, tell him he has to make a wish and he rolls his eyes, says that’s stupid, but he does it. closes his eyes for just a second before blowing the candle out. you don’t ask what he wished for but you think you might already know.

when you hand him the first slice, your fingers brush, and he doesn’t pull away this time. instead, he leans in, presses his forehead against yours, lingering there like he’s afraid the moment will disappear if he moves too fast. “you didn’t have to do all this,” he murmurs, voice low, almost unsure.

you smile, soft and steady. “i wanted to.”

and for once, kurt doesn’t argue. he just stays there with you, in the quiet glow of a day that was never supposed to matter, letting himself be someone worth celebrating, even if it’s only because you see him that way.
