Hidden Dust Zones: Where Spring Allergens Love to Hide
From Rust, to Spring Dust
“It was supposed to be a joke… a gift.” A voice said from behind her. Everything, and I do mean everything, slowed to a crawl, and then stopped. Baelfire, Nightshade, Mius, the cat… the chains… all of it, paused in a single moment. The pain in her wrists even receded, pretending that the chains were not even there. “You said a spooky carnival would be fun, and I joked about tickets… I didn’t think you’d make a thread.” He walked around her into plain sight. He was a tall man, well over 6 ft. (nearer 6 and a half), and a bit stocky, but not disproportionate. His head was topped with light brown, buzzed short, hair. Eyes of almond looked down at her with knowing sadness. He was wearing black slacks, and matching vest, with a white button up beneath it. The sleeves were rolled up in a disheveled manner, and the shirt collar was unbuttoned. He lowered his face to hers and said, “I am sorry, it was a birthday present. I didn’t know the demon was going to do this. I was giving you a gift.” In his eyes were sorrow, and seriousness. He looked like he was almost always serious. He looked like he’d just tortured one of his friends, and was truly sorry; and he… was me. I walk over to the cat and begin petting it even as the room lighting starts to change. The scene stays a tent, and Ace stays chained, but it becomes daylight, and a cool spring breeze drifts through the tent. The sun is beating down warm through the canvas, as the players melt away, save myself, Ace, and the cat, who has now unfrozen and is weaving itself between my legs. “A reprieve, for a friend.” I say, gesturing to the more happy setting, “all trials have recesses, and even the Demon cannot read the words written here. Neither…” I look down at the cat, knowing it for what it is, “can Mius. Not yet anyways. These are pages from my own book.” I look to the manacles clasping her bloody wrists, “Describe them to me, please… what do you see Ace?”
