On the topic of the spring ritual "dricka märg i benen" ('drink marrow into [your] bones'). This tradition existed all over Sweden. Most people drank some kind of alcoholic beverage. An expression from Finnspång, Östergötland goes: "Modstulen blir jag i sommar, om jag inte får dricka märg uti benen." ('I will become crestfallen this summer if I don't get to drink marrow into my bones.')
Ritual for the Robin
Today’s the day! The first robin has come to visit. To honor this spring time spirit I offer a gift of worms from my vermiculure.
But this also means it’s time to shed the winter beard ! Thanks to a tradition my neighbor has I have adopted growing a pretty mountain man like beard for the winter season, from Halloween until I see the first robin of spring! Shaving to have a clean fresh start just like the land going into spring time.
Today is a day of self care. Wintertime brings the blues but signs of spring bring back a little bit of warmth inside. So not only do I shave my face, I try to take extra time doing things for myself I often neglect. A time to remember that it’s important to take care of yourself.
