PSA on how amazing Service Dogs are
Ok so not enough people on tumblr know about invisible disabilities and how much a service dog can actually do for someone. I have a service dog that alerts and responds to 7 main symptoms I have (most of which the causes are still unknown). Some of my symptoms, I never formally trained her to respond to, she just picked up on them on her own and started alerting for them, most of them similar enough to where once she learned the chemical signals for one the others were seemingly easy for her to recognize. Smart dog, but it doesn’t end there.
Today I found that I have excruciating pain in my back and legs. Not sure why but I just kinda accepted a while ago that I get random symptoms at random times so I’m not concerned with the cause but the pain has made it nearly impossible for me to get out of bed. My dog, not being trained to respond to pain or anything like this, somehow knew that doing deep pressure therapy, which is a task she was trained to do but never in this context, on my legs would help with the pain and has been doing it for hours now.
Words cannot describe how truly amazing not only my dog is, but all service dogs. They adapt as their handler gets new symptoms and conditions added on to the usually very long list. They work to make sure their handler is ok and they love doing it. It is not “cruel” or “unfair” to the dog as some people say it is. They genuinely love helping their handlers and doing anything they can for us. Service dogs are amazing and are able to help with so many conditions, even if it’s not the original one they were trained for.
Lovely day out in Wasdale with the family. I even swam in the lake which is brave for me seeing as I can’t swim but Pebble was thrilled to have company for the first time. #familydayout #cumbria #springador (at Wast Water) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDzcQrUAYQG8v_PiDvZLxyAx2N-bfudFCBS4-40/?igshid=yr05v577gw9o
