Okay, so you know how in Lovecraft (derogatory) stories people will end up either coming across or being exposed to something "otherworldly" by accident and then slowly being consumed by it to the point of madness or whatever?

Maybe she was patrolling the beach and night and had an unfortunate run-in with the eldritch beast. Maybe she capsized off a boat and was "saved" by the monster in exchange for her obedience. Maybe it's like a "siren's song" thing, and he's been slowly eating away at her sanity by forcing her back to the sea, no matter how hard she tries to escape.
