Just saw ur post about Ikora and I agree to an extent but my feelings aren't that Bungie is trying to make Ikora seem sympathetic - just that that's how a lot of people are interpreting it. I actually think Bungie is trying to show that she has little to no empathy. (I also think her characterization has been a bit all over the place since CoO but that's another train of thought) look at the way she treated her ghost. She calls us her friend in CoO then says Cayde is the only friend 1 1/2

(2/2) I just feel like she doesn’t really feel the way we do, and would argue she’s along the Antisocial Personality spectrum tbh. She doesn’t understand why people express their emotions the way they do, that not everyone will react the same as her. Look at how she treats her ghost. It’s like - sorta fucked lol

I agree to some parts of this.

My (big) opinions down below:

Emotion has been a focal part of Ikora’s grimoire (notably her hotheaded passion, as noted by her Ghost), and it’s obvious she cares.

1. She looked down on Osiris’ 100% willingness to turn away from innocent people’s safety in favor of the stars.

2. She cared a lot about this guy named Shun (who was only mentioned in Grimoire) who apparently had a crush on her and loved talking to and about her. She thought gingerly of him while he was in the hospital after the outbreak. Bungie never bothered to bring him up again because of their biased character writing direction and the fact they only decide to put the most effort in great character background and relationships in Cayde. Nobody else.

3. She was also arguably the only one to accept and welcome Eris as she was (Zavala and the Speaker weren’t as welcome, Cayde joked as he always does but there was still obvious distaste between them. It was somewhat like he lacked empathy when referring to Eris just being herself and what she became), so she’s capable of empathy and sympathy.

This makes the conclusion of her lingering on the spectrum of Antisocial Personality Disorder sorta extreme. A little too extreme, imo, for all she has done and how she was set up.

I just want to sum up some of the crappy stuff that’s going on with her in D2 (cause I can relate to the character wonkiness you’re referring to) as her just grieving for a while, and not thinking as logically as she had in the past. They’ve recently experienced loss on a tremendous scale, and she’s only human. Maybe her way of grieving entitles her to put her emotions first, and that clouds her judgment and perception of people (which is actually typical in people who grieve, and nails her Ghost’s perception of her character on the dot).

It could also just be Bungie’s inconsistent writing. As you’ve pointed out, she regarded Cayde as her only friend as if Shun and Eris didn’t exist (along with her line stating we were a dear friend of hers). She also had a distaste with Osiris long before D2 (proof being her idle dialogue in D1), yet in the comics Bungie tried painting him as the good hero nobody understands, and they’re bad for misunderstanding him, and somehow Ikora agreed with that notion and was put there to hold Osiris in a good light. Inconsistency much??? I try my best to disregard their complicated writing.

A more elaborated part of my opinion is somewhat summed up in this article (I didn’t write it just in case anyone assumes. She also has a complicated relationship with her Ghost because, as stated by himself in recent Grimoire, they’re polar opposites. Of course they wouldn’t interlock as well, even though he thinks he’s a good balance for her (he is). But yea, her not talking to him for 60 years really, really boggled me. I get polar opposites, but really? That’s interesting.

So my meta thoughts about her are mixed, and I don’t like what Bungie’s doing with her as of recently as much. But I still love her because I’ll always be in love with the idea of a close Vanguard dynamic, and the space Bungo gave us to help further develop her character and appreciate her as the caring Vanguard mum.

I dunno if y'all know yet but like…the Vanguard working together and getting shit done with their unique characteristics and chemistry as the ultimate fireteam is my aesthetic and is a pure concept? I love it so much??? And im happier b/c it works and is now canon???

so when people come hijacking another Vanguard’s spotlight, discrediting all they’ve done and shove Cayde in there instead just because “hez supperrs funnie and goalz the other 2 did nothin” I can’t help but quirk a brow. Its surprisingly common in this community.

Here’s to hoping Bungo gets their shit together and gives the other two more “development”. They deserve it. and i deserve another Zavala smile

Hello, I also subscribe to your Ace could be Caydes daughter idea.

Cool beans! I’m not saying his child being female is canonically true, but it’s sure not confirmed his child was male (i.e. what literally everyone else is saying). Details on their gender hasn’t been confirmed in canon, nor will I think it ever will be due to the simple fact the topic is somewhat…meaningless at this point.

The purpose in Bungie giving this info to us was to state Cayde had a family in his other life, to bring more angst to the “Cayde’s-angstyass-background-story train.” They did a good job with it…only problem is, he seemingly completely waved them off after he got the job. He left his lover (wasn’t confirmed he had a wife. Could’ve been a girlfriend he had a child with) and immediately fell head over heels for a married woman (Maya), who, may I add, never bothered looking twice his way. I mean…I love you but…really Cayde?

But yea. I’d be just as satisfied if his kiddo was actually a female. I like imagining Cayde trying to father his daughter. So many cute moments~

I think Caydes humor is not as complex or witty in the trailers so far, I also think it shows a lot about his mindset. He's still trying to be funny and be the "comic relief" even though he's probably as terrified and depressed as Zavala or Ikora. He just knows that they need humor right now, even if it isn't all that funny. Otherwise, they lose hope and start to dispair. You have to keep up morale or you've already lost.

I agree with you on the morale part, and how his witty humor seems to disappear the more he’s on screen. The attempt to keep up morale could be achieved without just forcing humor out there. Randomly suggesting hugs after organizing a sort of coup on the Cabal, and after all that’s happened? Seems unecessary. I’m happy Cayde is open to hugs but lol honey boo right now is not the time for that.

Speeches like Zavala’s were able to rally a crowd and morale. That alone serves as proof there’s another way to keep up the spirit. I mean…in Cayde’s defense we all know that kind of seriousness apparently isn’t his strong suit. At least he’s trying to keep up the spirit. I always went with the idea he was just using forced humor (not his “usual” humor…the “forced” kind if you know what I mean) to cope with the grief (as you’re saying) since that makes it all understandable... but also bungo dammit Gimme back ma Roguish Commander.

Not saying I hate Cayde. Or purely dislike him. I love him. But Bungo reducing him to mere comic relief and just comic relief (I mean…that’s the direction they seem to be going in) is sorta disheartening, and is a fear of mine I hope doesn’t come true. There's so much more to him. I hope we see serious badass Cayde soon. A serious Cayde would be something new, and something I’m 1000000% willing to see.

P.S. I totally think Ikora and Zavala are more outraged than depressed, haha.
