This is one of those times he regrets opening his mouth without thinking ahead and holds up both hands in surrender. He’s not surprised that’s she’s reacted so harshly – really, he can’t blame her. It wasn’t the most sensitive thing he could’ve said.
“Whoa, there. You can leave my head, I didn’t mean anythin’ by it. I just mean, you can’t hit every shot, it just ain’t possible, so there’s no use gettin’ hot under the collar about. But since you miss less than one percent of ‘em, maybe my advice is bad.”
He’s not stupid enough to touch her. She’s not angry because she’s imperfect, she’s angry because she didn’t get the job done this time, and failure to get the job done means lost lives. Still, he can’t hold that against her and she shouldn’t hold it against herself either.
“You’ll get your chance, Santiago. This ain’t over yet. We’ll find ‘em and go again, until the job’s done. Then we’ll get drunk at a bar and play darts.” McCree still doesn’t touch her, although he desperately wants to pat her shoulder, at least. “We can only call this a failure if we quit before the job’s done, otherwise the game’s still on.”
This time, perhaps stupidly, he does touch her – a warm, gentle hand on the shoulder. Jesse expects her to shrug it off, and maybe even smack it away, but he figures the effort is worth the payoff. Later, when she’s not angry, she’ll remember he was in his corner, even if he said something foolish.
She feels immediately like an asshole, that doesn’t exactly help her disposition. She’s more annoyed that she feels like an asshole for snapping at him, but he does seem to realize his “mistake”, if one could call it that. She watches him, eyes narrowed, as he moves closer. She takes in his advice with a steely silence, not answering just yet.
He puts a hand on Xio’s shoulder after offering to go to a bar with her to get drunk and play darts. Even drunk, she beats him almost every time, though it’s not by much. Her sharp eyes are her advantage, but even that doesn’t always help against Jesse’s solid aim.
Xio shrugs his hand off her shoulder, but it’s gentler than it could have been. Her fiery anger has dropped to smoldering embers - it’s quiet, but it’s still there. She sighs, slightly in annoyance, slightly at feeling the tired just seeping into her bones. She looks at him for a moment longer, then pushes the strands of her hair that have fallen out of her face.
“Fine fine. But you’re buying at least the first two rounds, McCree.”
