Yesterday night I saw Spymonkey's production of The Complete Deaths, a celebratory Shakespeare pisstake that displays every on-stage Shakespearian death in a ludicrous whirlwind of slapstick, striking visuals, obscene comedy, original music, and at times, accomplished, poignant acting ability.
To give you an idea of the kinds of goings on that happened, when they did the deaths of Othello and Desdemona I was slightly worried because they had no black cast members. They performed the smothering scene by projecting the actors’ shadows onto a screen and when Othello came on with a big fake nose I thought “oh, God” but then, Desdemona’s shadow appeared, with a ridiculously long and pointy De Bergerac nose which got squashed and then pinged out repeatedly during Othello’s attempts to smother her.
