No one really talks about the true moment Emma and Regina started to bond. Both women begrudgingly agreed to meet at Henry's new park because the boy asked. After three days of nonstop rain, the clouds parted, the sun came out and Regina agreed it was okay to go outside. Despite being the only kid there, Henry ran up, down, and across his new castle inspired park, laughing unabashedly, finally out of the house. He paused for a moment, took in a deep breath, almost down to his toes of the crisp, spring air, smiling at his mothers, it growing when they both returned with ones of their own. He took off again, sliding down the pole, before booking it around the structure to the steps at the opposite end. "Surprisingly there wasn't too much clean up," Emma explained to Regina, relieved at their semi-newly found, easy conversation. She wasn't even bothered that the brunette didn't even bother answering her. She actually took this moment of silence to really look Regina over. Inwardly wishing everyone could see this soft Regina. The one that watched their son play in a world of his own a soft smile gracing her face. She was moments away from asking Regina if they could make this a regular thing when Regina's smile morphed into deep and instant dread. Before she could ask Regina what was wrong, she heard the telltale sound of something hard hitting metal, almost immediately followed by the heart stopping sound of a small body hitting the hard earth. Without thinking Emma took off before knowing where she was going at first, just seeing Regina's face and hearing her choked "Henry!", taking off in the direction of her gaze. She was on her knees next to Henry's head in seconds. Trying to look him over through the immediate onslaught of tears. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Regina drop to her knees next to Henry, gasping, trying to catch her own breath and not caring about her tears. The sight of Regina's tears, coupled with the mixed look of abandonment and deep fear of loss immediately cleared Emma's mind as every bit of training slammed into her. She took a deep breath, scooted closer to Henry, and gently placed her hands on either side of his head, just below his ears, securing his spine alignment. "Reg--," she choked, a lump caught in her throat as Regina sobbed against Henry. "Regina, calm down for me, please." "Don't you DARE tell me to calm down," Regina growled at her. "My son is laying here, hurt. I will NOT calm down." In this moment, Emma didn't argue the "my son", she didn't balk at the enraged look being shot at her. Regina was terrified. Understandably so. But Emma needed her in this moment. "Regina, I know you're scared," she powered through any attempt at arguing. "I just need you take a breath. Clear your head," taking her own advice, Emma closed her eyes and took a deep breath before continuing. "And tell me if he's breathing." Emma held her own as Regina hit her with the most agonized expression she's ever seen. After a second, Regina turned her gaze to Henry, lowering head next to his, her ear at his nose. "Ye-yes," she stuttered as a fresh stream of tears graced her cheeks. "It feels faint but it's there." Her eyes turned back to Emma's and the lump reformed in the blonde's throat at the begging in Regina's eyes. Begging for an explanation of what to do next, begging to tell her he would be fine. "Pulse?" Emma hated the question. She knew it was necessary but she cursed it none the less. She hated the question that caused the heart breaking gasp from Regina, the woman's hand shaking and clasping. The unsureness clear in her eyes. "Take two fingers, place them against his Adam's apple," she explained quietly but quickly "Slide them toward you, to the gap between that and the muscle." It took Regina a minute, her eyebrows knit in concentration. Emma's heart stopped as Regina's eyes filled with tears and turned to her. "I feel it," a sob broke from Emma as relief flooded her veins. "Okay, good, good." He was breathing. His heart was beating. She let the knowledge slow her own heart and clear her mind. He was still unconscious and he had fallen at least five feet. "We need to call the ambu---" before she could finish her sentence his body began to shake. She fought to keep her mind clear as he continued to shake, Regina's scream broke through her haze and she dropped all calm. "REGINA," she all but shouted. "Breathe. PLEASE. For me. For Henry. BREATHE." The brunette quieted almost instantly, mostly from shock by looked at Emma, nonetheless. "Grab his shoulder and his hip and turn him toward you. I need to keep his spine as aligned as possible. Fighting her quaking limbs, Regina nodded and immediately followed Emma's directions. She rested her forehead against her arm, trying to calm her gasping breaths, vaguely aware that Emma was talking to her. "Regina, breathe," Emma spoke calmly, despite her heart pounding wildly in her throat. "We're both here and we will get through this." She repeated this over and over until the brunette nodded. After an agonizing minute Henry's body stilled and they rolled him back onto his back. "Emma," Regina gasped, unable to speak beyond a whisper. "There's blood coming out of his ear." Her eyes were wide, every part of her shaking. "I think he hit his head when he fell," she explained, struggling to maintain her calm. "I think he's okay for the time being. Call an ambulance." Regina fumbled into her pocket, her shaking hands dropping the phone once before she successfully dialed and spoke to emergency services. Once she hung up, she uncaringly dropped the phone and tightly grasped Henry's limp hand. "He'll be okay, Regina," Emma spoke quietly, mostly for the brunette but also for herself. "Recheck his breathing and pulse," at this point, she was sure they were both there but she knew it would reassure Regina. "Breathing is still a little weak," she whispered. "Pulse is steady and strong. She finally turned her gaze back to the blonde. "Emma, I --" shrieking sirens broke the quiet of the area and their moment seconds before EMTs came running to their side. Emma gave them the rundown as Regina held her spot, hands refusing to release Henry, her eyes not leaving his face. While the EMTs took over care, checking his vitals again, Emma stood behind Regina, placing a hand on her shoulder, and shocked when the brunette placed her own on top of it, gently squeezing it. When the EMTs pulled Regina's hand free of Henry's, Emma gently grasped her arm, keeping her next to her as they moved Henry to the gurney, and walking with the brunette closely behind as they followed them to the ambulance. Emma calmed slightly when Regina did not fight the arm placed around her shoulder, the hand helping her into the back of the ambulance or the arm retaking its place around her shoulders. She silently thanked the EMT for not arguing their presence in the rig. She felt Regina relax against her as the steady beep of Henry's heart filled the vehicle, the EMT stating that his breathing was getting stronger and he wouldn't need to be intubated. Emma took Regina's hand when the ambulance came to a sudden stop, the double doors flew open and several doctors and nurses burst in, conversation quickly flying between them and the EMTs. The group took off with the boy, leaving both mothers behind, struggling to keep up. After five minutes, just as Regina was starting to lose her patience and moments from demanding an answer, a nurse walked over to the two women. "Sheriff, Madam Mayor," quickly continuing when realizing she wouldn't get a response without answers. "Henry is going to be okay," another pause as twin gasps of relief sounded. "He has a major concussion and slight bleeding. It appears mild and the doctor believes it will resolve on its own but he wants to keep him here for observation." "Yes, of course, thank you," Emma spoke up first, as Regina was struggling to keep her tears at bay. "When can we see him?" She choked out. "Very soon, the doctors are checking a few things but someone will be out soon to take you to him," after both women nodded in response, the nurse headed back into the room. When they were finally alone, Regina fell into Emma, deep, breaking sobs taking over her body, the fear of the day and the relief taking over her. Gone for the moment were the fights, the fairy tales, the evil queen and the savior. In their place were two moms, scared beyond belief and relieved that their boy would be okay. Once calm, Regina stood tall, though not moving far from the blonde's side. Before she could form any kind of explanation, Whale came up to them. "Henry is going to be fine," he explained cooly. "He's going to have to take it easy for a couple weeks. He sustained a major concussion and a few broken ribs, but will make a full recovery. He is very lucky. If you'll follow me, I'll show you to his room." The three of them walked in silence, which continued even after Whale left, as both women took in the sight of their son on the hospital bed looking especially tiny. They sat at opposite sides of the bed, each taking a hand. "Emma,"Regina spoke softly, breaking the silence. "Thank you for being there today. For being calm," she shook her head, slight shame coloring her cheeks. "I completely lost my head and I don't know what I would have done if you weren't there." "Regina, you would have been fine..." "No," Regina interrupted. "The second I saw him slip, I couldn't think, please," she stopped, taking a deep breath. "You helped me through that, and I just want to thank you." "Of course, Regina, always," Emma chuckled with a small shake of her head. "I'm not just here for Henry. I'm here when you need me, too." Regina blinked in stunned silence. Her mouth opening and closing repeatedly as she tried to form a response, to even think past the clear and open caring in Emma's eyes. "Moms?" A groggy, small voice broke through their silence and brought their focus to the brown eyes fluttering open. "Hey, honey," Regina smiled down at Henry, her heart finally slowing when his eyes met her own and a small smile graced his lips. "What happened?" He asked quietly, grimacing at the pain in his head. "You slipped and fell kid," Emma explained when it became clear that Regina simply wanted to take him in and let her mind accept that he would be okay. "Knocked your head somethin fierce. But you're gonna be okay. Probably gonna have a wicked headache for awhile, but you're gonna be fine," she paused, chances a look at Regina, shocked when she found the brunette already staring at her. She placed her hand over Regina's in Henry's hand and smiling brightly when the brunette dropped her free hand on the pile, squeezing slightly and smiling softly at them. "We're all gonna be just fine."
