MK, this is probably a strange/seemingly random question, so lemme contextualise: I'm an addict of /report, but also an anime fan, so every time it's brought up, I felt awful for never having watched Sailor moon (#fake anime fan much?). So, I am now trying to watch it, but I don't have the power of nostalgia to endear me to it. If you feel able to/would like to, could you explain what makes it SO GOOD? Both for its time and for you personally? - random questioner out

I totally feel you, man. This is probably how I feel about star wars or something. But oh god, I could talk about this like… forever, but here, I tried to be quick-ish:

It’s a matriarchy. There are almost no men in this series, unless they are a love interest or a villain. Major themes of each season are about female friendship, female power, female romance, etc. It’s completely female gaze, which is almost unheard of and super refreshing. 

And there are lots of different kinds of women in it, too. The inner senshi themselves are obviously pretty different from each other, but even when you compare them to the outer senshi, there are huge differences. The inners have problems typical for people their age. The outers have more adult issues to deal with, and differently complex interpersonal relationships with each other.

Role models. People probably already know based on my username(s), but I am an exceptionally clumsy person. Not romcom clumsy, but legit, there is an issue in my brain that means it reads ‘up’ as actually sort of diagonal, so I walk into walls, fall down a lot, trip over things, etc etc etc. Also some vision issues like not having peripheral vision until I was ten or eleven - these all combine for a pretty hilarious amount of physical clumsiness. And I failed math with marks in the same range as Usagi/Serena. 

So one, it was AMAZING to see someone on tv I could really identify with in that way, especially at a time when most female cartoon characters were Super Tough or Good At Everything. She was a total change for me, and probably for a lot of other young girls, who felt not good enough. When I watched sailor moon, it didn’t matter if I was clumsy and bad at math. So was Usagi, and she was the main character and still the hero. She didn’t need to be good or useful to have friends or get things done. She had her own value and her own talents, separate from all of that.

And if you didn’t identify with her, you probably identified with someone like Rei, who came off as angry or mean but cared deeply about her friends and was always doing her best, or Ami who seemed standoffish because she was afraid and anxious, or Makoto who was trying to find a new definition of femininity, or Minako who pasted on a smile but was deeply troubled inside. 

There are a lot of comedic gags and lulzy episodes in sailor moon, but the show also highlights complex female characters in a way that said it’s okay to be happy and it’s okay to be sad. And it’s okay to talk about those feelings with your friends, because no matter what your impressions of them are, they’ve probably experienced the same thing. 

Gorgeous art. Not every episode, obviously. There are several different animation styles in sailor moon, and there are some I really dislike obviously, but there are some that are AMAZING. I had never seen anything like this before when it came out. Like check out these water colours:

Wish fullfilment. Sailor moon could do things I always wanted! First, she had a cat, and bonus: it talked. And then the cat gave her a sweet as stick that let her transform into any one she wanted - like Mystique but more magical girl and fun. Need to sneak in somewhere? Transform into a reporter! Or a model! Or a pilot! In the manga, she seduces a ghost bride by transforming into a handsome groom. Not joking, it was amazing. 

EVERY TROPE. The premise of the show is essentially time travel reincarnation amnesia magical girl romance plus an apocalypse. That’s how it starts. After that we get things like, oh hi, your kid from the future, or theme park horror, or ghost stories or or or. People describe shows like this as monster-of-the-week, but I also like to think of sailor moon as trope-of-the-week. And I love tropes.

All this aside though, watching the original can feel like a slog because there are a lot of ‘filler’ episodes. If you want to only see the important parts: (Japanese number, english dub number; english title / japanese title)

2-B has a lot of problems but still lots I love, but is a lot harder to watch for most people.

Yeah, which I understand, although a lot of phrasing makes it seem like portraying homophobia at all is itself homophobic, and that SJM needs to be condemned despite the fact that the series isn’t even over yet, which is what I have a problem with.

 I’m completely behind supporting books with positive queer narratives (although a lot of people seem to only virtue signal over it, which is a whole other discussion entirely), but I think we’re jumping the gun a little with Mor -- we know that the series isn’t officially over, and we know that the series has been all about overcoming trauma. A lot of discourse seems to forget those things.

Oh, lordy. Um… I’m lucky enough not to have really gone through a lot of these, but probably when my best friend at the time (sort of slash girlfriend - it was a mess) broke up with me? Noooooooot good.

Really good! I talk to my mom almost every day, and my dad about once a week. They’re both really good people, honestly. I love them. <3
