Sorry Mr. Custodian
As a square dance caller, I rely on many people in the square dance world. For most situations, there is someone on the board of a club that handles any task--everything from scheduling, booking callers, dance themes, weather concerns, refreshments, and making sure that the club has a place to dance. And with a such a team, there are the occasional goofs.
Once upon a time in a small town in upstate New York, I drove to a dance. And as usual I had my Mom and a couple of her friends who (for confidentiality reasons) I will call MB and DB. The trip to the dance hall was rather smooth, but as soon as we arrived at the place, we realized that the custodian had forgotten to leave the door unlocked. I tried all of the other doors with no success. I had to call the custodian.
But... This was before the invention of the cell phone (and I'm sure some of you remember that time). The closest pay phone was a short distance away, so I left my mom, MB and DB in the car, and I walked out to the pay phone. I was able to get the custodian on the phone, and he told me that he would be there ASAP to unlock the door. Since the phone was not far away, I rejoined my party before the custodian arrived. Miraculously, the doors were open and the lights were on.
I didn't think anything of it. I was happy to be able to set up my equipment and get the dance started. This jubilation soon ended when the custodian arrived. He was infuriated. He wondered how we gained access to the hall. I told him I wasn't sure since I was on the phone with him at the time of the miracle. With promises that whatever happened would never happen again, we were allowed to continue to use the hall.
Several years later, the truth came out. DB, a man with many talents, used a credit card and managed to get the door open. Mystery solved! Unlike the TV show Dragnet, I am not sure that the locks have been changed to protect the innocent.
