Favorite Comics of the Year

Now if you know me, you know how much I love comics. Not necessarily DC or Marvel but more on the small-scale side. Chicago has a large local zine/comic scene with places like Quimby’s and Chicago Comics that help foster an actual community around the craft (of course there are countless other comic shops, but these two in particular specialize in promoting local artistry). Instead of the slight alienation I feel amongst masculine spaces and walls filled with superheroes, it’s nice to feel like I can browse freely without having to prove myself to anybody.

And of course, you can’t talk about comics in Chicago without talking about CAKE! The Chicago Alternative (K)omics Expo has been one of my highlighted events for the year, with dozens of tables featuring artists from home and abroad taking place at the Center on Halsted in Lakeview. While my comic shopping there this year was sparse I did manage to find these two gems.

Squeaky Noises by Cara Bean is based off of the author’s retired racing greyhound in his interview/conversation with a squirrel that sneaks in through the window. The dog describes the rigors and reality that many racing greyhounds face, which is often an ugly one, and the adjustments to a life with a family. A portion of this short, melancholy story is donated to Greyhound Adoption Organizations. You can buy Squeaky Noises here.

My top comic from this year was one created for and featured at this year’s CAKE: Operation Menu by Sara Drake is based on her time as a guide at the Cambodian Association of Illinois. While Drake is not Cambodian, her thoughtful renderings of history outlined through a secret FBI bombing during the Nixon administration made for a poignant, solemn booklet. 

The cover is a beautiful tri-color primary risograph print in a pattern that seems to be reminiscent of the artifacts at the Association. Drake’s work is simple but evokes emotion by giving an honest rendition of what she learned in her time as a docent. While I could not find Operation Menu for sale, the beginning of it can be seen here on Sara’s website; or if you live in Chicago and ask nicely, I may lend it to you.
