Gill Grunt

Gill Grunt is a water core from Spyro’s Adventure. His primary attack is to shoot a harpoon from his harpoon gun, while his secondary is to shoot a stream of water. His tertiary is activating his water jet pack so he can fly a short distance above the ground. His upgrade paths enhance his harpoons (top) and his water spray (bottom). I would recommend the water spray path, as it unlocks the ability to have the water gun and jetpack never run out of water, which is very useful. His water gun does good damage with fantastic knockback. I definitely enjoyed him, but I think he's a little basic. Gill Grunt is a true longranger with a dash ability. It's noteworthy, and he's very beginner friendly, but he's a little boring for an experienced player. Overall: 7/10. I enjoyed him, but there are better longrangers in later games.

Trigger Happy

Trigger Happy is a tech core from Spyro’s Adventure. His primary attack is to shoot coins from the two guns he holds, and his secondary attack is to throw a pot of gold in front of him. His tertiary is to summon a golden machine gun that shoots golden bullets. His upgrade paths enhance his golden guns (top), and his pot of gold (bottom). I took mine down the pot of gold path, because it turns a simple mid-range toss to a more area-of-effect attack, which is needed due to the nature of his other abilities. Trigger Happy is one of the truest longrangers I've ever seen; I've had to run away from enemies multiple times to find enough space for his abilities to be effective. That said, he's very fun. Unlike most skylanders, where you have to perform a specific action to get them to speak, (opening a gate, winning a battle, opening a chest, suchlike), Trigger Happy will laugh and chatter for no reason other that that it is fun. He's a horrible, loud, little gremlin, and I can see why he's so loved. Overall: 8/10, Trigger Happy is a solid longranger.

If you want to play as a similar skylander, Trigger Happy is similar to Star Strike (of Swap Force)

If you want to play co-op, Trigger Happy would be fantastic support for a true shortranger, like Bash or Slam Bam (both of Spyro's Adventure)

Eruptor

Eruptor is a fire core from Spyro’s adventure. His primary attack is to throw a lump of lava in an arc in front of him, and his secondary attack is to erupt, and leave a damaging pool of lava in a circle around him. His tertiary is to spit out a magma ball that rolls around. His upgrade paths enhance his primary lava lob and his eruption. Both of his powers are mediocre without upgrades, so you should really find out which one you use more often before you pick a path for him, and even then you still have to use both. That said, I would take the lava lob path because it increases the range and damage of the lava lob, and even without upgrades, the eruption is usable as a backup. He is what i call a committing versatile skylander, meaning that once you take him down an upgrade path, he goes from true versatile, to longrange vers or shortrange vers. He’s good if you prefer either strict longrangers or strict shortrangers, and want to try something new without worrying that you’ll hate him. That said, I do not understand the popularity of Eruptor. He has struck me as an extremely basic, mediocre skylander. There are many characters more fun to play, with varying levels of complexity. Everything he can do, at least one other skylander can do better. Overall: 3/10. Just didn't grab my attention. There are better fires, better shortrangers, better everything. I do not understand how this guy got a series 3 instead of many others taking that space.

If you want to play as a similar character, Ninjini and Hot dog (both of giants) play somewhat similarly

If you want to play co-op, Eruptor would play well with a strict shortranger (like Stealth Elf or Stump Smash) or a strict longranger (like Lightning Rod, Hex, or Flameslinger)

Stealth Elf!

Stealth Elf is a life core from Spyro’s Adventure. Her primary attack is to slash and stab with her blades, while her secondary is to disappear, and leave behind a ghostly decoy. Her tertiary is to tumble forward, stabbing as she goes. Her upgrade paths boost her blades (top) and stealth mode (bottom). I prefer her blade path, as her stealth mode is good with just the basic upgrades. Stealth Elf is a true shortranger, using her stealth mode to get in close, then darting away before an enemy can hit her. I think that Stealth Elf absolutely kicks ass. She's fast, she's stealthy, her enemies will ignore her in favor of her decoys, she's the best. She can be hard to learn, so I wouldn't recommend her as your first skylander, or your only skylander, but she shines for an experienced player. Overall: 8/10, fantastic. Definitely recommend.

If you want to play as a similar skylander, Stealth Elf plays similarly to Ghost Roaster (of Spyro's Adventure), Trap Shadow (Swap Force), and Enigma (Trap Team)

If you want to play co-op, Stealth Elf would do well playing guard or defense for a longranger, like Lightning Rod or Prism Break.

Drobot

Drobot is a tech core from Spyro’s Adventure. His primary attack is to shoot lasers from his eyes, and his secondary attack is to fling bladegears from his wings. His tertiary is to fly, rocketing forward with damaging afterburners. If you hold the tertiary attack button, Drobot can also hover. Unlike many of the other dragons, his flight is a little harder to learn, as he can be a little hard to steer. You can't stop Drobot while he's flying and have the afterburners still running. His upgrade paths enhance his lasers (top), and his bladegears (bottom). Each path upgrades the damage of what's already there, so if you prefer using the gears, go down the gear path, if you love the lasers, take the laser path. Regardless of which path you take him down, Drobot is a force to be reckoned with, tearing through enemy health bars as if they're nothing. His lasers have incredible range, and the hover can keep him safe from traps or melee enemies. I heard that he was overpowered in Spyro's Adventure, and they toned him down for Giants. I played him primarily in Giants, and he ripped through everything he saw. “If he can do that in Giants,” I thought, “how overpowered is he in Spyro's Adventure?” Overall: 10/10. Drobot is deservedly popular. If you don't have him, you're seriously missing out.

If you like Drobot's play style, and want to play as a similar skylander, he plays similarly to the ranged dragons (think Cynder and Whirlwind), and other fast longrangers, like Flameslinger. (All of Spyro's Adventure)

If you want to play co-op, Drobot pairs well with other versatile skylanders (I enjoyed pairing him with Flashwing, of Giants), or a skylander a little older than him, so that they're equally powerful.

Sunburn!

Sunburn is a fire core from Spyro’s adventure. His primary attack is a beam of flame from his mouth, while his secondary is to teleport to one of four spots (marked on the ground) around him. His tertiary is to flame dash some distance in front of him. His upgrade paths boost his flame breath (top) and his teleportation. I recommend the flame breath path, as it gives you the ability to run around just holding the flamethrower infinitely. Like some other skylanders, he needs upgrades to really thrive. I like this guy, I think he should have gotten more figures. (s2 Sunburn in swap force instead of s3 Eruptor? Anyone?). Aesthetically, he’s fantastic. Dragons are nothing new, culturally or for the skylanders franchise, but Sunburn, as a fully feathered dragon, is like no dragon I’ve ever seen. (You should see the collection I have!) Overall: 9.5/10, definitely grab, especially if you want some novelty playtime

If you want to play as a similar skylander, I’d suggest Cynder, (of Spyro’s Adventure) because she’s the only other dragon i’ve seen with two dash abilities that remains versatile.

If you want to play co-op, Sunburn would pair well with a fast longranger; like Flameslinger or Hex (both of Spyro’s Adventure), and, like most dragons, Sunburn pairs well with most other dragons.

Ghost Roaster

Ghost Roaster is an undead core from Spyro's Adventure. His primary attack is to whack things with his chain tail, and his secondary is a large skull charge that can send him ricocheting around the map. His tertiary is to enter ectoplasm mode, where he can't attack, but is invulnerable to enemy attacks, at the cost of a few hp every few seconds. His upgrade paths enhance his skull charge (lower) and ectoplasm mode (top). Ectoplasm mode doesn't do any damage unless you take him down the upgrade paths for it, and even then, doesn't enhance it significantly, which is why I'm taking him down the skull charge path. I think he's a horrible-looking, fun little guy, and he's extremely fun to play! You can play him very complexly, balancing his ectoplasm mode with his other abilities, but if you don't have the patience or energy, he's just as fun being played as a simple shortrange charger. Overall: 9/10. Fantastic representation of the undead element, especially early on, fun play style, I love this guy

Wrecking Ball

Wrecking Ball is a magic core from Spyro’s Adventure. His primary attack is to whap things with his long tongue while his secondary is to curl into a force field ball and bounce around the map. His tertiary is to unleash a belch that does damage. His upgrade paths boost his tongue (top) and his force field ball (bottom). I'd go with the force field path if you like combos, as that opens up comboesque abilities while you're using the ball. However, the two abilities you will gain are very similar. If you don't like the ball, or combos, go with the upper tongue path. I never really use his magic ball ability, as it's difficult to steer and stop. His tongue powers are the only attacks that do good damage, and they're too precise to be useful in melee range; Wrecking Ball is a longranger, with some dash abilities. Unlike similar skylanders, Wrecking Ball is very hard to use; his spins are chaotic and hard to maneuver, his burp attack simply doesn't do enough, I'd only grab him if you're into quests, in Giants. His heroic challenge makes some quests easier for your other skylanders. Overall: 4/10, I really wanted to like him, he just doesn't do enough.
