Silent Six, False Nine
Jackie Lives AU. Explicit. 150k+ words (ongoing). Jackieshauna centric. Slow burn. Minor Lottienat (but it's complicated) + canon ships. Multiple platonic dynamics explored (core Jackienat). Warnings for suicide, self-harm and minor character death.
“Why do you even care?” Jackie emphasized.
“Because we’re a fucking team, Jackie. We need to remember that or this- this is all gonna go to shit, I can see it.” Nat tilted her head, her gaze intense and inescapable. “You may not be my favorite person-”
“Gee, thanks,” Jackie mumbled.
“Shut up,” Nat said sharply, her voice becoming a tense whisper. “Can you just listen? You’re one of the few people who still seem to have their head screwed on. You’re not checking out and leaving me alone with the mob that got high and tried to sacrifice Travis to the trees or whatever the fuck that was, okay? The team needs you, Cap.”

Jackie chooses to live. The game changes.
If Jackie survived how do you think she’d react to the eventual cannibalism? Since she throws away food and is very depressed I wonder if she’d have to be forced into it? Curious to hear your thoughts 😊
I mean I sort of wrote my answer to this into Silent Six, False Nine in one way.
Though obviously it all happens differently, because in the show the specific circumstances of her death are the catalyst of the cannibalism to begin with. I think they’d still have to have someone else die of natural causes and be pushed to the brink by starvation to consider it. Like it rly depends on the circumstances but if they’re all starving, if Shauna’s starving, then Jackie at least thinks about it imo. Not for herself though. I think she’d have to be kind of forced/begged because she just doesn’t care about her own survival enough to do that. One issue comes in that I think it’s arguable she wouldn’t let Shauna butcher the body. Shauna’s her focus, she cares about her more than the others and more than her own life, and if she won’t let Shauna do it then is anyone else capable? I’m not sure they are tbh.
But ultimately it’s so difficult to know, because who would Jackie have been if she’d lived? Can kinda guess it at, but really we can’t know, especially since her characterisation is built on the idea of her lying, putting up a front, being deliberately hard to know. It depends at least a little on what else happens to her in that winter, whether she and Lottie continue to oppose each other, and how her relationship with Shauna heals or doesn’t. If she’s opposing Lottie and the wilderness religion, and it’s Lottie’s idea, then maybe she’s violently opposed to it just on principle. So yeah, basically it feels like Jackie would oppose it, but we saw how she reacted when Shauna almost passed out from hunger in season 1. How shocked the others were with how she spoke to Nat, like they weren’t used to seeing that side of her. I think she’d be scared enough of losing Shauna that it could feasibly override her morals/aversion to the idea.
so… sometimes I draw my fic instead of writing it. anyone who hasn’t read silent six false nine yet, close your eyes.

have you read Silent Six, False Nine by slippingunder on ao3? it's a jackie lives fic and a really good one, imo. your posts about jackie not really knowing who she really is and distancing herself emotionally from shauna remind me of jackie's characterization in the fic. the first chapter is... depressing, to say the least. but I think it's so good.
thats my fic 🧍
I stumbled on Silent Six, False Nine and loved it, I love reading how different things would have gone if Jackie lived. And in the middle of reading it found this and I've been enjoying your thoughts on Jackie and soccer. Which is so great because I also found reddit and uh, was a bad idea since from the few posts I've seen people didn't think Jackie was good at soccer. And I was so thrown because not just anyone could be on a team that's undefeated.
Anyway, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your metas, yj soccer posting and your character analysis! Thank you!
Fully on a mission to get the yellowjackets fandom to understand how the on field dynamics of the team reflect in the show lmao. Half the reason SSFN exists. And that just because Jackie wasn't AS naturally talented as some of the others, that doesn't mean she didn't have her strengths. Personally think Coach Martinez perhaps didn't see the truth of those strengths, and so he didn't value her as much as a player, that would make a lot of sense for a character thats so misunderstood by everyone in her life.
Thanks for letting me know you loved my fic and thoughts on Jackie I love talking about all the allusions to soccer in the story 🫶🏻
So wait, is Jackie a false 9?
Um. No. At least I don't think so. I think she played as a traditional nine for the most part.
The title for Silent Six, False Nine is two things. 1) a play on the idea shauna didnt say as much as she should, and jackie wasn't honest about who she was, aka 'silent' and 'false' and 2) metaphorical descriptions of their roles within the story
the six is often thought of as the silent position because they are incredibly pivotal to both the defense and attack, but they often go unnoticed and underappreciated by those who dont properly know the game/arent paying attention. this has always been shaunas position within the narrative. (until she forces herself into the 9 role, Jackie's role, in season 3)
then you have the "false nine" as a reinvention of a traditional role. its a position that relies on the opposition expecting a certain type of player, and realising they're facing something altogether different. aka what im alluding to in the fic is the idea that Jackie did not play as a false nine, but perhaps should have done. that her abilties werent fully recognised and she would have done better playing in a different way, aka using her love and understanding of the game to create more scoring opportunities for others, rather than just focusing on herself. A false nine concedes a lot of the glory and attention that a traditional striker might recieve, since they tend to score less goals, but ultimately, done right, the entire attack benefits from the fluidity. it makes a team so unpredictable. this all becomes a metaphor for the idea that she never fit the traditional role she was forced to play off the field either, and had she been allowed/fought to be who she truly was, she could have reached some unknown potential.
(the whole of SSFN is very soccer metaphor heavy lmao. but i really dont force it to be it just feels like it fits.)
so essentially, jackie in some ways being/becoming a false nine is only really relevant to the fic, its not my take on how she played in the show. i think she was playing as a traditional striker in the pilot.
Silent six, false nine question if I may, because I wonder :
The chapters headers, I'm pretty sure some of them are stromae's lyrics but are they all ? Are they something else ? Does it have a deeper meaning ?
Oh the epigraphs yeah ! tbh the only thing that links them is they're all lyrics to french songs that I like. Sorry it's sort of a nerdy inside joke with myself more than anything. I take some inspiration (? Idk if thats the right word but i think of another way to say it) from The Magus (aka the book we see Ben reading in season 2 and that I have him give Shauna in SSFN). In that book theres a bunch of french epigraphs from the Marquis de Sade, and I listen to a lot of french music so I thought it would be fun to use lyrics that have stuck with me in SSFN the way Fowles used de Sade quotes in The Magus. Especially since when Lottie supposedly speaks with the voice of the wilderness in the show during the seance, she speaks in french.
But basically no lmao they dont have a super deep meaning, its just fun for me to pick out lyrics I relate to Jackieshauna for the fic.
