Chapter 7
Dan’s POV
I slowly open my eyes to find myself laying on Phil’s chest, on the bed that’s in my cell. “Dan!” he blurts, bringing me into a deep kiss.
I kiss him back, his hands cupping both sides of my face. I don’t quite remember what happened, but I do know that my back feels like it’s been eaten by a lion. “Mm,” I say in between our kiss. “what happened?”
“Marcus whipped you senseless, I swear to god, I’ll kill the bastard.” He says, continuing with the kiss.
“How’d we get on the bed?” I ask, because the last I remember I was on the floor and Phil was underneath it.
“After Marcus left, I lifted you up to set you down, you unconsciously mumbled something about cuddles and then you collapsed on top of me.” He answered, running his fingers through my hair.
“Why did they even put a bed in here?” I inquired.
“I don’t know but I’m glad they did. Do you always talk this much when someone’s trying to kiss you?” he quips, pecking my lips one more time before leaning his head back against the one pillow that was there.
I rest my head back down onto his chest, noticing that he didn’t have a shirt on. “Where’s your shirt?”
“I used it to clean up some of the injuries on your back, some of them were pretty bad.” He says, his voice breaking a little bit.
“I’m sorry that you had to see that. I was hoping you wouldn’t have to see any of the things he does.” I say, rubbing his pale skin soothingly.
“It’s okay, soon you won’t have to deal with any of this. You can be back in your own kingdom.” He said quietly.
“Mm, that’s not necessarily a good thing.” I trail off, thinking about what my father would say. Not only have I developed feelings for another man, but this man just so happens to be the prince of our mortal enemies. He would probably have a conniption.
“What do you mean?” Phil asks, running his fingers gently through my hair.
“For starters, we couldn’t see each other anymore.” I began, and Phil interjected.
“Well that’s an easy fix, we can just meet in secret.”
“Would you want to do that? It’d be pretty risky.”
“It’d be worth it. Plus, there’s this spot that I really want to show you, it’s great.” He concluded.
“God, that sounds amazing.” I say, imagining getting out of this place and getting some fresh air. “But anyways, if I did go back home who knows what my father would say and do.”
“Don’t worry about him for now. Just get some rest, your back must be killing you.” He coos, and I was already half asleep on his chest.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I’m probably crushing you aren’t I.” I say, stifling a yawn.
“No, it’s fine. As long as you’re comfortable.” He insists, pressing a kiss to my forehead.
“Thanks, Phil. For everything.”
“You’re welcome.” He says, as I feel my eyes start to close.
Phil’s POV
“Ah, Philip! Where have you been?” My father’s voice beckons as I enter the family dining room.
“I was talking to a prisoner.” I replied, sitting down in my spot at the table.
“That’s lovely, dear. Anything new?” My mother quips.
“Not really, although I did get to attend a meeting with father today.” My father smiles warmly at me. “Speaking of, is there any word on when King Howell plans to send the ransom?”
“Yes, he said he would send it as soon as he got back, so it should be arriving within a day or so.” As my father speaks, servants fill the room with trays of food.
“That’s excellent!” I say as the servants place the food in front of us and make their way back to the kitchen. “So, when will we be preparing Prince Daniel for release?” I ask, trying to be somewhat inconspicuous about my excitement.
My father laughs lightly, and leans in closer to the center of the table. “Probably never.” He says quietly.
I almost choke on the piece of steak in my mouth. “What do you mean? Isn’t the King delivering the ransom?”
“Well, yes, but we won’t be giving the prince up that easily.” He says nonchalantly.
“Isn’t that a bit morally skewed? To just scam the King out of his son like that?” I rebuttal.
“This is war, Philip. As the old saying goes, all is fair in love and war. You need to realise these things if you ever want to be a great king.” He answers, sitting back in his chair.
“Yes, while that may be true, it doesn’t mean cheating the King of Darkness will do us any good. Anything may be fair in war, but wouldn’t it be nicer if we weren’t in war to begin with? The Kingdom of Darkness despises us as it is, do you think angering them more will do our Kingdom any good? Father, we have soldiers, good men, dying for us out in battle, and you have the audacity to play this war like a playground game?” I finish, staring at my father waiting for an answer.
He just stares back at me for a while, looking shocked that I said what I did. “Philip, now is not the time to be discussing such things.” He says, looking over to my mum for reassurance.
“Then when will be the time, father? When our entire Kingdom is dead, and you have no one left to fight for you, and nothing left to govern?” I retaliate.
“Philip,” My father starts, clenching his teeth and slamming his fist onto the table. “you are behaving very unkingly right now, I suggest you think twice before you speak again.” My father says, looking at me with venom in his eyes.
“No, father. If you do not wish to listen to my reasoning, then I will be excused.” I retort, standing up. I abandoned my plate of food and march towards the door, not even looking back at my father.
As soon as I shut the door, I hear my mother speak up. “Nigel, you didn’t even listen to the poor boys opinion.” She starts. Before I can hear my father’s answer, I turn and head towards the prison.
I slam open the door, making Dan’s head fly up, his eyes blinking rapidly as I close the door and shut off the lights. “Hey Phil, what’s wrong?” Dan asks, noticing the scowl plastered on my face. I stomp over to the post and remove his restraints as efficiently as possible.
After they’re off, I practically lift him off of the ground and start dragging him towards the door. “Phil, what’re you doing?” he starts, somewhat resistant.
“Getting you out of this hell hole.” I answer simply.
“Hold on a second.” He says, coming to a stop behind me.
I turn around to face him, and he keeps a hold on my hand.
“What do you mean, we can’t just leave.” He points out.
“Yes we can. I’m the prince, I can do whatever I damn well please.” I say confidently.
“Okay I don’t know where this sudden tenacity came from, but just think this through for a minute.” He said calmly, looking into my eyes. “If we did just leave, we would have nowhere to go. We wouldn’t be able to find anyone to help us on such short notice, and we’d essentially be screwed.” He reasoned.
I let out a huff of air, realizing that he was right. “Well, do you have any contacts in Novicus that would be willing to help us get you out of here? Because there is no way in hell that I’m letting you stay here longer than necessary.” I say bluntly.
“There are a few that I can think of, but you’d have to be extra careful in contacting them. Also, why are we doing this? I thought I was getting out soon anyways?”
“Yeah, apparently my father thinks it’d be funny to collect the ransom and keep you here, but I’m not letting that happen. So we’re gonna make a plan to get you back to Novicus.” I say, flashing him a smile.
He leans towards me and presses our foreheads together, giving me a smirk. “You know, this could get you into a lot of trouble, Lester.”
“I am well aware, Howell.” I talk back.
“You think you’re up for it?”
“Positive.” I answer, returning the smirk. I close the remaining space between us, pulling him into a loving kiss.
