Week 2: Beginnings Day 11: Graduate

Kakashi watches his new team with something akin to nostalgia, he can’t help but remember his own. Idiots he calls them, he doesn’t like them they remind him too much of his own team and he can almost see them doing the same mistakes, going down the same roads, tripping with the same stones.

He can’t help as he sees Obito in the blonde loudmouth, in his pranks, his laidback attitude, but most of all his determination.

He can’t help but see Rin in those cotton candy locks and those too green eyes, maybe it’s the hope that shines there, the too bright smile or maybe it’s just the way those love struck eyes turn to where they shouldn’t.

But maybe more disturbing is how he can see himself in that analytical gaze, how he can almost see the walls that surround him refusing to let anyone in.

Yes, they’ll make the same mistakes.

And he’s afraid to just watch as history repeats itself.

“What I like…I mean the one I like…” And she sways her arms in front of her and it’s painful to watch.

Then he turns to her and his eyes regard her for only a second but that’s enough. He turns his stuck up gaze to the other side an almost invisible blush on his cheeks. Like they’re so below him and he’s so immune to a little warmth.

Kakashi knows exactly where it’s going.

He smiles from beneath his mask as he pretends. He turns a blind eye to her ever loving gestures to his almost too subtle way of looking at her.

He teaches him the Chidori.

She falls in love.

And the course is set.

Week 2: Beginnings Day 9: Trauma

Sasuke doesn’t sleep well, not since he has the curse mark on his neck, not since it dawned on him how far he is from attaining the strength he needs.

Day in and day out is nightmare after nightmare and it’s like he’s eight years old all over again.

His nights are plagued with thoughts of loss and he wakes up restless and in need of air. That night is no different. There is a scream at the tip of his tongue threatening to drown in the silence that is ready to suffocate him.

His fingers wrap around the bed sheets and he’s afraid to close his eyes, afraid of the darkness or worse, the images that haunt him.

It’s one of those nights in where he misses his mother, the comforting embrace that he could only find in her arms.

For the longest time he doesn’t move.

His heart is pounding in his chest and the images will not leave his mind.

All he sees is how he loses them, how he does nothing to stop them.

He sees her cry tears and tears and she never stops while he just walks away.

But maybe even more terrifying is how he sees the life fade from her eyes, how it is his hands around her neck and he can’t stop.

Maybe he doesn’t want to stop.

How she whispers his name, love tainting every syllable of her voice as it breaks, and her pulse dies slowly under his touch.

He’s trembling, biting his lip as tears slid down his cheeks.

Sasuke-kun!

He hears her voice as sickly sweet as always.

He sees the green fade from her eyes.

And he’s sobbing in the confines of a secluded house shrouded by the darkness. He cries like a child, like he’s eight years old and losing everything all over again.

It’s too real.

Sasuke-kun!

He brings his hands to his face, bringing his hands at both side of his head he rocks back and forth covering his ears in hopes of tuning it all out.

Sasuke-kun! Sasuke-kun! Sasuke-kun!

But still he hears her, her voice continuously saying his name and with every time she speaks she dies a little more.

Sasuke-kun…

Week 2: Beginnings Day 8: Mission Impossible

He’s taking a walk as he spots her, a flash of pink in the crowd. She’s smiling with Naruto and Lee at both her sides listening politely at Rock Lee as he talks. He doesn’t realize how he’s stopped walking until she turns to him.

Her smile growing, almost contagious. “Sasuke-kun!” She greets him from afar waving her hand at him. “Come join us.” She says and without thinking it twice he’s walking towards her.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to, we’re on our way to Ichiraku’s.” Naruto tells him and from the look on his eyes he can tell that for him they’re already two too many.

On the other hand Lee greets him, fire in his eyes as he speaks. “More competition, and my eternal rival no less, but I will prevail.”

He turns to Sakura then, who seems oblivious to Naruto’s intentions and Rock Lee’s insinuations. She doesn’t seem to realize that she has them both stupefied by her mere presence. It’s not something that surprises him anymore.

Sooner or later, without a doubt.

They’ll all fall.

“I’m gonna sit on Sakura’s right side.” Naruto demands glaring at Sasuke who took the seat seconds before he spoke out.

Sasuke scoffs. “Too late, dead last.”

“Wanna fight?” It’s not something unusual for them but the reason behind it is.

“A fight for the maiden? Do not leave me out.” Rock Lee declares as he too takes a stance beside Naruto. And to his surprise Sasuke feels like he’s up to it, the fact that it’s a fight for her love doesn’t escape his notice.

But she stands before he can say anything. “Stop it you two, Sasuke-kun will not sink to your level.” And she turns to smile at him apologetically as if their stupidity was somehow her fault.

Her smile is bright, her cheeks tinted a pink color, and her green eyes as ever radiant stare at him and he’s at a loss for words.

The way he can’t manage to form a coherent sentence while looking at her, the way his heart starts pounding in his chest, and how her name is stuck on his lips.

It’s all so annoying.

And maybe it was his turn to fall.

Week 2: Beginnings Day 7: Mortality

She can’t say she recalls the exact moment in where he stopped being Uchiha Sasuke, so many different memories stand out.

Once upon a time he stood in where she could not reach him, far away from her reach always so high, so untouchable, up in a cloud in where only he belonged. He was so perfect, so unreal, almost a fiction of her imagination.

The white and red fan stood proudly on his back, it was like he walked on a whole different world than hers. A world of strong people, one she was sure she could never reach.

But at some point he became just a boy, as boy as she was girl, and suddenly he was human…as full of faults and insecurities as any other.

“Sasuke-kun!” Somehow he’s not so different from her anymore. “Sasuke-kun!” He turns to her his eyes slightly widened telling her he was deep in thought. “Are you alright…?” She can hear the worry in her own voice, she’s afraid that the mark on his neck will take him away from her someday.

“Aa.” And she can tell as easy as she can tell between day and night that he’s lying.

He hasn’t been alright for a while now.

“You know you can talk to me, right?” He nods, but she knows he will never tell her a thing, because after all she is nothing to him. She can’t not see the way he hurts, the way he contemplates his every little decision…and no one aside her seems to notice how he’s fading away.

Slowly…ever so slowly.

He’s slipping away!

Far, far away from her reach, further than he’s ever been.

He’s not perfect anymore and it doesn’t matter. He’s broken, barely holding up, missing pieces, but none of that matters.

He’s out of her grasp…

“Sakura…stop worrying about me…” The look on his eyes makes her heart skip a beat.

…but still she reaches out.

And she thinks, that maybe, just maybe it’s love.

Week 2: Beginnings Day 6: Skin Deep

She watches him writhe in pain, the contorted features on his face telling her that he’s burning and all she can do is sit there and watch. She’s helpless to help him, for the fifth time she replaces the damp towel on his forehead with another and pretends it actually makes a difference.

She still feels his grip, strong on her hand as he held on to her. She still hears his screams resonating through the forest when all she could do was stay close and hold on to him while tears stream down her cheeks.

Her eyes are red and she’s not sure she could manage to shed another tear.

She sits, hands on her lap she fumbles with her dress as she watches him closely hoping for him to awaken.

The chakra that surrounds him is suffocating and heavy and the mark on his neck stands there as a curse.

She can’t forget the voice of that terrifying person in the forest, his threat that bordered on a prediction. “He will seek me out.” He said a sinister smile spreading across the lips. “He will seek out my power.” And she was afraid, terrified of him being right.

Her eyes stare at Sasuke’s form, a worried expression on her face. All walls are down then and she’s never seen him look so vulnerable before. Like an angel fallen from heaven, he looked lost and his perfection only skin deep.

A grunt of pain escaped his lips and she rushed to his side, biting her lips to keep from sobbing. “Shhh.” She shushed placing a hand on his cheek. “I’m here, I’m here.” She repeats again and again, although she’s sure he can’t hear her.

She’d do anything to take the pain away and the realization she can’t is almost enough to break her. “Please Sasuke-kun…” She pleads her voice breaking as sobs escape her lips.

“Please, open your eyes, please come back to me…” But he’s as unresponsive as ever and she sheds the tears she no longer thought she was capable of. She’s never cried more in her life.

~ She’s both beauty and brains, but then both he and Naruto catch up and soon she’s left behind.

Week 2: Beginnings Day 5: Test

Most of the time in training he would see how she would push at her hardest, it never amounted to much. There was something she lacked, it wasn’t the smarts or the resolve.

And as always there she was her face buried in her hands.

It’s not that Kakashi didn’t notice, more that he didn’t care enough, and Naruto was too oblivious. It just left him to watch as she tried unsuccessfully to improve, as she tried her best to fit in to a team that didn’t care for much other than her presence.

During training he watches her carefully, she looks up to Kakashi, wishes she could be as persistent as Naruto. She’s the first one to master whatever it is Kakashi throws at them, the first one to have the answer to any question.

She’s both beauty and brains, but then both he and Naruto catch up and soon she’s left behind.

As Sasuke looks back he sees her looking after them, trying to catch up desperately, longing in her eyes.

No one is there to teach her, he realizes in time. To Kakashi is always Naruto and Sasuke and Sakura just smiles and pretends not to notice.

“Good luck, Sasuke-kun!” She always says a forced smile at her lips while she wishes she could join in.

“Maybe it should be you who should be training.” He tells her and the words sound harsher out loud. But hope quickly flashes in her eyes, excitement radiating off her.

“Don’t worry Sakura-chan, leave it to us.” Naruto says as he walks back to training and a frown takes over her features. Naruto didn’t mean it that way but it doesn’t matter.

“Just sit back and relax.” Kakashi tells her.

“Of course, I don’t want to get all sweaty.” She tells the gray haired ninja pretending she isn’t dying for the chance to discover what she’s made off. Kakashi eye rolls visibly probably buying her act.

And Sakura she turns to him then, a sad smile on her lips and a thank you in her eyes as she sits back for the hundred time that week.

And that’s how he realizes that what she lacks is the chance to test herself.
